Getting money into my account on time

I am really annoyed because I'd forgot about something going out of my account and I have a direct debit due that will now show as insufficient funds but I have money that i could put into my account, but due to a course for work, I cant get there on time. Any ideas how I solve this?

Its Barclays bank (dumping them soon fed up with them). I only need to put in a few pounds to cover the cost. Its £35 a day otherwise - totally not on for a fiver over the o/d limit to my mind. I have to the put the money in the day before - if it was the actual day of the direct debit I'd be OK, as I can get to the bank then, so this is even more annoying.

Why don't banks open late once in a while - maybe you know of some that do?

I will try and reclaim the charge but the high court case means I have to wait/mightn't win anyhow so trying to avoid charges where I can.

My own fault I know but its so annoying!! They won't increase the limit either.

  • If you are in overdraft then you are using the bank's money not your own!
Do they not have a letter box for you to hand deliver a credit with money in it? Could not a friend or a member of your family not take the credit in for you?

It sounds like you are using anything and everything as an excuse to me.
  • very sympathic!! Though these forums were for advice not to be criticial. I was hoping people would have constructive advice. If I am so for making excuses then i'd make an excuse for the course, call in sick or something but I'm not like that.

My family have died. I've moved somewhere I can't ask people to do this yet.
Why should I dump this one someone anyway, not far to say to someone go to the bank for me really is it!!

The bank doesn't have a facility to do this. I did ask them and they don't.
  • Having been there before and going through it again now I can assure you that one thing you'll get on these forums is honesty.

People will be critical, but remember it isn't just for the sake of it - usually the things people say that cut a bit, are the things that really hit the mark.

To be honest, though the wording may seem a little harsh, I think ejones did give some valid advice.

HSBC certainly have deposit machines you can use outside counter times (sometimes subject to opening times of the doors themselves) in Manchester for example there is a branch on Cross Street (I think it's cross street - opposite Boots) that certainly has deposit machines available outside normal opening hours, whereas the considerably bigger branch on King Street does not.

I've never heard of a bank that insists you pay everything in person. Simply giving someone a paying in slip (back of your cheque book if you have one?) or giving them your account details and asking them to drop it in for you should do the trick.
If not, what account do you have with what bank so I can avoid it? It sounds pretty shoddy if you can't do something as basic as that.

You may say it isn't fair to ask someone - but most half decent people wouldn't mind. In fact, most people I'd consider anything close to a friend (or more distant family, aunts, uncles, heck even a priest or something might be able to help!) would be happy to even go a bit out of their way to help out.

Failing that, forego your lunch break on the course and head for the bank instead. Sometimes missing out on something "essential" is all that it takes to get things sorted.
    Use your imagination ;)

When will I ever learn? Think we all ask that at one point. Haha.

  • Looks at ejones999 other postings and i'm not alone in saying he/she is very critical. There is a way of saying things without being damn right rude.

There is no lunch break or I'g go then. I can figure things like this out for myslef. Was hoping to get advice like a way of banking online???

If this is the attitude I'd sooner pay £35 than be insulted by people on forums.

My family have died, so how can they put money into an account - perhaps I should ask a priest this!!!

Oh sorry I'm being sarky now, perhaps its catching.

You must be allowed a lunch break on the course if its all day. They cant make you work all that time without a break. And if it is the case that they dont then if you have a quiet work with the course leader to allow you a quick break to go to the bank. I am sure they will understand and oblige.

there is a way to save yourself the £35 fee but its a bit of a long winded way,
if you cannot make it to the bank at all you could call telephone banking to cancel the d/d so you will not be charged by the bank if the company try to take it.
it can be done up until it is claimed by the company, however i would check with the company that the direct debit is to first to ensure there are no penalties for this from them.
they may even be able to take a one of payment over the telephone from you and then once this month is over they can send you a new mandate to set it back up again
i know it might be more hassle than its worth but its a suggestion

another suggestion, without sounding patronising, is if you might have any other accounts with them that you may not have used for a while ,that might have had a couple of quid that ya could have transferred over to cover it

  • Thank you iceicebaby. Nice that there are people who give some good suggestions rather than being funny to me like the other two.

I am a bit stuck as I don't drive and the bank is a far way from the course. I will see if he can give me a break away. We have a working lunch so no break as such really but they feed us for free. We talk about the course during the breaks so I might miss out something, so was hoping to get around it another way eg anyone know of late opening banks - if not to help me this time to help another.
  • this is more like it!! What a good idea. I am going to change banks soon so it will need me to cancel direct debits and set them up.
    Thank you boots

    no bother,
they are open till 11,but if you can only ring them on the day it is leaving i would ring as early as possible, even if it has been taken they are able to recall the payment providing it has not already been returned unpaid by the bank, they can definately do this just incase you get someone awkward,i know this because i work for them{dont shoot me down ,it pays my bills and keeps my kids clothed :o },

  • I can't believe you actually said that.
I took the time out of working like a dog clearing my own debts to try and shed a bit of light on the good advice wrapped up in a sharp post and you accuse me of being funny with you?

Care to explain how my suggestion of going in your lunch break was me being "funny" now you've said you are actually going to try to get a break to go anyway?

Care to explain how we were supposed to know exactly what you wanted advice about (online banking) if you did not suggest that was what you wanted advice about?

You asked for ideas as to how to solve the problem and that is EXACTLY what you were given.
That you didn't like the suggestions does not make them funny - especially if you then take the exact same advice given by a following poster and declare it worth a try.

Notice a few other things I said...
"though the wording may seem a little harsh"
that was agreement - not some kind of hidden insult.

As for the priest - well let's see, maybe not the most serious suggestion but the point was, there are usually people other than family that you can ask to help you out of a bind by the simple act of detouring via a bank.

I pointed out that a lot of decent people would be happy to help, wheras you seem to think that would be way out of order to even ask.

But no, I was being funny - apparently.

See my signature? That says "not perfect".
See the bit in brackets? That says "in no place to judge".
I assure you, I was not being funny to you.

Apologies for taking time out of my day to try to help you - I assure you - with an approach like yours, I won't make that mistake again; but still, (genuinely) the best of luck in getting everything sorted out.
