PC World/Currys HDMI Lead

I needed a new DVD player so ordered online to pick up in store on Sunday.

I needed one in a hurry.

The DVD player only has a SCART socket no HDMI.

It cost £25.

Was asked "Would you like to buy an HDMI lead for it, only £15?"

When I said I had a SCART lead I was told "but you get a better picture with a HDMI lead"

At least she didn't try and sell me a £90 lead.

Hardly surprising is it? They're renowned for being generally crap and more sales orientated than customer service.

She probably has no clue as to the difference between SCART and HDMI, probably thinks they're interchangeable and just different brands of cable...

    What's your point?

That the sales clerk should be intimately familiar with the socketry on every box that comes through the store, even those that aren't on the shelf, and merely pass through their hands via online purchase, and which remain in sealed boxes...?

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some basic knowledge from the so called "sales clerk" if they're attempting to sell things and stating 'this works better than that' type stuff.

If you're working for an electronics retailer and are actively trying to upsell something then I'd expect you to have some, even basic, knowledge of ports, sockets, connection types etc... even if that is done as part of in store training.

I'd expect connection types to clearly be stated on the box - it would have taken her all of 10 seconds to check.

OP should not have been offered a HDMI cable, nor told it would work better than a SCART cable - on a product that does not have a HDMI outlet.

    I'm amazed you've asked that.

Even the merest iota of common sense would tell you that if your JOB is to sell products which, by their nature, use different connections and termination standards, you should probably ensure that you check that any cables or accessories you're suggesting your customer buys, are compatible with the device you're suggesting they use them with... You ARE claiming to be the expert in that transaction, after all.

    -sigh- It's not rocket science...

Unfortunately PCworld/ Currys staff are definitely not rocket scientists.

Used to go into my local store in the town and act thick and ask the staff about the products for sport.

I found out very quickly they don't have a clue about the stuff, only the what they can get out of your pocket.

Evidently the '£90 hdmi lead' is well known scam they do for the public who just go in there and have no clue what they are buying except it's 'a TV'.

I worked there for a month - I'm a technical person, but telling the truth and guiding people in the right direction rather than hard-selling useless leads and pointless warranties got me terminated during my probation.

Didn't sell enough Whatever Happens policies, didn't sell enough £100 HDMI leads, offered too much useful advice. :D

When my £15 gold plated bobby dazzler HDMI lead died, I got one from Poundland to replace it. Hand on heart, absolutely zero difference whatsoever.
