Auto renewal of car insurance

Do motor insurers have the right to autorenew policies? I've just had a letter from Hastings Direct saying "To make things straightforward we'll automatically renew your policy for you", taking payment from my card. (Oh yes, and by the way we're increasing your premium by 50% even though you have made no claim).

Is this something I would have agreed to in the small print when signing up with them? If not then surely they shouldn't be doing it. It really annoys me.

It only takes a phone call to stop it.
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

On the flip side I wonder how many more people would be unknowingly driving without current insurance if they didn't auto renew policies.

    Yes.

Looks like you agreed to accept the ts + cs without reading them!

LV have always asked me about auto renewal, and I always decline. I do my renewals by phone and so they can't just slip it in the small print. The last two years I've done a price comparison and LV have come up cheapest, even cheaper than the renewal they've offered me:mad:

Even Tesco was always way cheaper than their own auto renewal offer.

Cheque do they still have them? I am with Hastings and had the same letter just phoned up and cancelled it. My advise is to do a comparison check on the sites. Get the best 3/4 quotes then go on to Topcashback .co.uk and see if the insurance companies are doing cash back you can save a couple of hundred £. Certainly worth the time.

It definitely pays to use one of the many comparison sites to see what others quote.

My renewal with Hastings came through last October; shopped around and use the Live Chat facility.

Managed to get them to price match.
