Unidentified bank withdrawal

Options
Each January I have noticed that I have a payment going out by standing order to Girobank for £12.00. I have no idea what this is for. I have identified that it is to a Santander bank account. I have the sort code and account number. I would like to identify what this is for before I cancel it.
How do I find out who it is going to?

Standing Orders are setup by the customer. Have you agreed to pay bills or something that use girobank at the post office....

Girobank privatised to Alliance and Leicester, bought by Santander.

When did this yearly amount start?

Girobank references was used by A&L, dropped by Santander so it possible predates the A&L takeover mid 2008. Or around that time.

Contact Santander and ask them for help.

Could it be an ancient card protection insurance policy?

Yes, mine (Credit Card Sentinel) was also £12 in the old days. Although it always got charged to the credit card, so as this is a SO it may not be that.

It's likely a long forgotten service that was previously charged and that they've not stopped charging you for.

My parents had an A&L account which they pretty much forgot about. When they went to upgrade it to a Santander 1-2-3 account last year, I noticed that they'd been charging them £1.50 a month for "Weekly Statements" even though they'd never requested it and never received weekly statements for. Told them and they refunded it as it was their mistake.

If you're not sure what it is, speak to them and if you're not actually getting anything for it, they'll likely refund it back to you.

But it's a Standing Order so is therefore entirely at the control of the OP, who will be rather fortunate to get any refund.
  • If you have Internet Banking connected to your account then it should be easy to view all your STO and perhaps then the penny might drop. If no penny moment and you do find the STO .. you can easily delete it online.
