Really? My old Montego VdP 2.0 did 40 mpg. on motorways back in the late 1980s measured brim to brim over 320 miles.Marktheshark wrote: »On a motorway at steady 65 mph the 1.4 petrol may scrape 40 MPG.
Around town and expect 23-27 mpg and combined about 30-32.
It is a very old design engine.0 -

Ah, but that wasn't a VAG 1.4, and Mark's diagnosis comes from a standpoint of his superior knowledge that ALL VAG 1.4s are clapped out, badly worn, smoky timebombs by the time they've rolled out of the showroom.0 -

If a tank held for instance 40 litres it wouldn't be perfect it might take 50 miles for the first quarter 100 to half then 300 for bottom half.
It's simple fill it up drive for a bit then fill it again so the 30 litres or whatever you put in is a hard amount to base figures on0 -
As already posted.
If the OP wants to actually find out what their MPG is they need to do a brim to brim calculation.
If they are a genuine poster that is.
I wouldn't expect 40mpg out of an 1.4 08 Polo. It was never economical when new and sold to those who thought they were choosing an upmarket brand.
When their budget would have been better spent on a Clio/Fiesta/Yaris/Ibiza etc and they could have had a more economical engine and much better specification for the same cash.
Brim to brim calculations in the Picanto have varied due to usage, best was 48mpg, worst was 42mpg.
Car is fast approaching 9000miles so we have done not far off 2000miles so far. Doing 80/90 miles a day at the moment. Mostly round town with a little bit of less busy A Road.
Fuel costs are nearly half that when the Berlingo was doing the same journeys.
Fuel saving is £180/190 a month, which means the HP is less than the fuel savings.
The Berlingos days are now numbered, if I am getting high 20's to the gallon Inwant to do it in a Legacy estate Auto.0 -

Is your Berlingo petrol?
I'd a petrol Berlingo van - a 1.4 petrol - at one point. Loved the vehicle, but fuel consumption was :eek:0 -
But the fact that it's only achieved 95 miles after i filled 33 litres, and it's already at half tank, isn't that an issue?
It's measured with a little floaty thing on top of liquid, and the tank mightn't be a uniform shape. Not accurate. Most I've had last longer in the bottom 'half' than the top 'half. If your tank is indeed 45 litres, your gauge is probably showing you the top 40, and the bottom 5 is probably below the scale, to help people not run out of petrol.
Anyway, we haven't got an accurate measurement yet.
The bigger the drive you can do between stops, the more representative the 'data' will be. Fill up, reset the trip, note the price per litre, and cost, drive as long as you dare before filling up again. Note the miles on the trip, the number of litres you've put in, the price per litre, and cost, and fill up again. Repeat. With this data, you can work out the MPG for (nearly) a tank's worth of fuel, and can be even more accurate by repeating this. This is far better by working things out roughly, especially if you've been going fast or stuck in traffic.
Litres put in x 4.54 = gallons
Miles on trip / gallons = miles per gallon you have done on that tank.0 -
Unless your very easy on the throttle and read what's in front of you on the road then 40mpg is ambitious in a petrol doing a normal run. A 200mile trip up the motorway sticking to 70 would be another thing. Most of my petrol cars used to do low 30's.0

Erm, do you maybe want to rethink that?
