I live down here in Cornwall. If you are coming down on a 'changeover day' ie a Friday or a Saturday I would try to get at least as far as Okehampton (Devon) on the A30. You can then rest up, have a walk on Dartmoor or a look around the castle or steam railway and get up early the next morning to make the last slog. It will be a slog as the A30 roadworks at Temple are on for 2 years and we are only a year into them. It is a single lane for 9 miles or so and a strict 40mph limit. The tailbacks were 14 miles BEFORE the roadworks on Easter Thursday.
You may get lucky with the Travel Lodge at Sourton Cross https://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/93/Okehampton-Sourton-Cross-hotel0 -
I would second Taunton - there are several hotel/chains and pubs/restaurants just off M5 Junction 26. Again, there is a Sainsbury's for cheap petrol too.0

I agree. I was going to suggest Exeter area at end of motorway. Both the M5 and A30 get really busy in the holiday season so you need to be as far down as possible. Stay Exeter/Okehampton overnight and you can be on the A30 bright and early, before the mad rush:D0 -
Certainly agree with the get past Temple posts before stopping. I also live in Cornwall and make sure I travel the day before flying out of Exeter or Bristol, usually stay at a Travelodge.0

Yep coming down on a Saturday....I really like the idea of getting as far down as we can and then staying overnight. Thank you.Respond to every call that excites your spirit.0 -
Agree with the Okehampton comment but atleast go for Exeter if that doesn't work out. The trouble will be at Temple where the works are happening so the further down you get the better. The last I heard though was that 2 lanes will be open in each direction this summer, the junction works etc.. Won't be done so I imagine the reduced speed limit will be in place but should help compared to easter.0

I live in Cornwall and commute to Salford.
Usually takes me about 6-7 hours with two stops.
August hols are 13 hours plus.
Bristol is exactly half way.
Anywhere from Tewksbury to Somerset would be ideal.
You could route via Plymouth (A38) instead of the A30.
You probably wouldn't save much time but it's less sould destroying, and the kids 'll love the Tamar Ferry.Illegitimi non carborundum:)0 -

Thank you all. Have been researching for a while and I think stopping off at Wellington, Somerset might be a good idea. The Travelodge there has rooms for the dates we want.Respond to every call that excites your spirit.0
