Dirty Coal

We buy smokeless eggs for the stove and lately its got really dirty. Every day when I dust I'm getting tons of black gritty horrible dust - not just a film of it either - loads of it. Sweep is due next month. Might ask coalman for something else, but husband was cleaning the flue out and is asking what exactly that's for? Is it like a damper on a normal coal fire?

Did the fire originally have a back boiler?0 -
Yes we had an ordinary open fire with a back boiler and then the HA put in this room heater. It's a Parkray Cumbria.0
