Bassett is on the Winchester side of Southampton, I own a rental property there ( don't ask why, never intended to).

Nice leafy area, easy access to motorway, mixed housing from flats to 5 bed houses, close to uni.

It seems like I nice area though I have to admit I have never lived there.

I wouldn't want to live in Fremantle/Shirley but I am quite possibly out of date basing this on my experiences from near 20 years ago.
Shirley has improved, not so much freemantle. I'd also rule out Townhill.

Quite costly, but yes nice. I live at the bottom end of Basset/Portswood, like you say very good transport access.

Given the Op's young child and requirement to be near Hursley i'd say:

    Bitterne
    Portswood
    Upper Shirley
    West end
    Hedge end
    Bursledon
All the aforementioned in previous posts

    Further out:
    Park gate
    Fareham

Plenty of options but it's a pretty fast moving market here.

Where are you working? Hampshire is a big place! Alton/four marks could be worth looking into.

A big development going on in bordon/ whitehill too.
