Compensation for canceled holiday?

I had short 4 day holiday booked with my wife to Barcelona recently, this was booked via expedia.

A day before our departure Ryainair had cancelled the flight. We managed to get a full refund as they could not put us on an alternative flight for 2 days. Expedia also gave us a full refund from the hotel as our holiday was ruined

Now I believe we are entitled to compensation for the flights which is around 100 Euros.

But me and the wife had taken annual leave from work which was not required anymore. Can we get this compensated?

Whether or not you are entitled to compensation depends on the reason for the cancellation.
If it was because of "extraordinary circumstances" which is generally things like weather or strikes outside of the airline concerned then no compo is due but generally you are entitled to it for any other reason.


For a flight from the UK to Barcelona you are entitled to a minimum of €250 and possibly €400. (the €250 is for flights of up to 1500km and it's €400 for flights over 1500km.

As Shaun said, depends entirely on the reason for the cancellation.

If, as an example, it was because of the recent French Air Traffic Control strikes, then no compensation is due to you from Ryanair.

Couldn't you just have cancelled your leave?

Compensation will depend on why the flight was cancelled. Airlines are not responsible for consequential loss so you wouldn't get anything for lost leave. Consider yourself lucky that Expedia refunded your accommodation costs.

It's not lucky if they booked refundable accommodation.

The French strike wasn't affecting any Spanish mainland flights as they don't touch French airspace

They've also flown through French airspace when I've been to Spain. Ryanair did cancel some of their Spanish flights during the strike, and others were delayed.

It might have been cancelled because the plane might have been stuck at a french airport.
