Question about cancelling car tax after sale

The website is straightforward. It asks you for the all the details i.e. sell to somebody (person or trade it doesn't matter or sorn) If there is any tax due for refund that will be processed automatically, payment is by cheque. Don't post anything to them!0

My husband sold it to a mate at work who wanted an old car with plenty of boot space. He's signed the V5 and kept section 10 as it states to do. I kept the sections 1-8 and got it ready to post to the DVLA. I just went online then to cancel the tax. Surely I need to post the V5 sections 1-10 too though?
From what you say above, you have not cancelled the tax and need to post it to DVLA. Or did you complete the online saying you sold it privately and entered the new keepers details?0 -
It needs to be 'www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle'.
Some of the unofficial sites have 'gov.uk' (or similar) as part of their web address.0 -
Just sold one, and done the online transfer.
You enter the registration mark and doc ref number from the front of the V5
fill in the new keepers details
fill in your email address
Then they send a confirmation email, and about 5 days later a slip that says you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. The tax refund would be with the slip or follow, but is very fast.
You can then destroy the front half of the V5, or keep it as a record of who you sold it to.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

They don't have a domain name ending in .gov.uk though.Rover_Driver wrote: »Some of the unofficial sites have 'gov.uk' (or similar) as part of their web address.0 -

sold my car Friday to an online buyer who collected the car. I retained the yellow slip and completed the sale details online on friday. Very impressed when a cheque arrived today(Weds) for the £45 refund.
this is the site:
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax
Just realised had I sorned the car in the last couple of days in March (the car wasnt being used anyway) I would have got an extra month refunded. Silly me!0
