Question about cancelling car tax after sale

We have just sold a car and so I went online and cancelled the car tax on the Gov website. After putting in all the details it confirmed that the tax was cancelled and also said to destroy the V5 and not to send it to the DVLA. Is this right or have I read it wrong?

Just worried in case I was on one of the bogus websites instead. Its only an old, cheap car but Im not sure whether to send the form off now.

Did you sell it to a trader or for scrap?

In any event, it dosn't sound right to me.

If you notified the change of keeper on-line using the .gov.uk website (only available 0800 - 1800 mon to sat), or by posting the completed V5C to the DVLA, they will automatically refund the tax for any full months remaining.

    from DVLA site

Sold your vehicle to a private individual or business

You’ll need the 11 digit reference number from the latest V5C registration certificate (logbook).

Give the green V5C/2 section to the buyer and destroy the rest of the V5C. You don’t need to send it to DVLA.

The buyer must tax the vehicle before they drive it on the road or make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). The tax isn’t transferred when the vehicle is sold.

That doesn't make any sense at all.

Who did you sell the car to - a private buyer, a dealer, or a scrap merchant?

The tax will be 'cancelled' and any remaining full months refunded, if you declare SORN or notify a change of keeper.

I don't know how one would cancel any other way, except perhaps export or break up yourself.

As for not returning the V5 - do you mean the bit notifying changes.

The new keeper should have been given the green part 10.

My husband sold it to a mate at work who wanted an old car with plenty of boot space. He's signed the V5 and kept section 10 as it states to do. I kept the sections 1-8 and got it ready to post to the DVLA. I just went online then to cancel the tax. Surely I need to post the V5 sections 1-10 too though?

The above only applies to on-line notification.

The DVLA need to be notified of the change, either on-line, or by posting the completed V5C to them - in which case you do not destroy it.

You can either notify the DVLA on-line tomorrow (0800 -1800), in which case any outstanding tax will be automatically refunded. Or post the rest of the V5C to the DVLA, and they will automatically refund any outstanding tax when they receive it.

If you notify on-line, you do not post the V5C, you destroy it.

I suppose Im confused because you used to have to transfer ownership by sending the form to the DVLA and cancelling tax was a separate thing (although you normally passed on the tax to the new owner). It seems its all done together on the Gov website now because you can't transfer tax, ie. you transfer ownership and cancel tax with the one form.

Still not sure whether to post the V5 form just in case anyway?

If you notify the change of keeper tomorrow, or have already notified the DVLA using the 'gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle' website, you do not post the V5C, you destroy it. Any outstanding tax will be automatically refunded.

If you have notified the change of keeper online DO NOT send the V5 is as this will confuse the system. Do as the website says and destroy it. If you are not sure it has been done correctly, phone DVLA and ask them.
