European Breakdown Cover

I've always used AA 5Star in the past but my annual AA Relay cover has
lapsed and I'm due to go on a three week holiday mainly in France in a
couple of weks. Any thoughts on what combination of UK and European
breakdown cover would be best for a car that is 18 years old?

Thanks in advance

    Try,

    http://www.europ-assistance.co.uk/

    or

    http://www.rowett-insurance.co.uk/insurance/breakdown_cover.htm

I need 3 weeks cover in Sept, but i have not looked into the policies yet.

The Rowett cover is really cheap, but i don't know why?

I don't know if any of the above cover older vehicles.

    Hi,

We're having to shop around too, especially with having an older car because AA added extra 'loading' last time because of our cars age, we were arranging it last minute so didn't have any alternative (we phoned from a mobile en route to eurotunnel).

We're going to France for 2 months this time, so can't afford those sorts of prices again.

    Saw this MSE article:
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1094823518,14076,

Says there's a link to European Cover for cars upto 20 years old.

    Article also covers UK cover.

Got a bad internet connection so can't look things up more precisely, keep losing signal!

Decided to go with the MSE recommendation:

Cheapest European Cover. Phone and web broker Quotelinedirect has an exclusive deal with Europ Assistance for a £59 annual ‘AutoService’ policy covering any individual vehicle (less than 20 years old) for a year. This includes home-start, and onward travel for passengers plus up to 90 days a year cover in Europe. However, those not going to Europe regularly should stick with a UK-only policy and take out separate cover if needed for a single trip.

    Thanks for all your help

My annual travel insurance has European breakdown cover built in. Arranged via Portman BS, it costs about £75. I think Leeds & Holbeck BS have similar. I haven't checked anything about car age on it though.

(UK breakdown cover is on my car insurance)

Do these policies cover you for recovery after an accident?

I read somewhere that breakdown and accident cover are not the same,i can't remember where though.

The details on their site I posted above is somewhat at odds with the wording on the policy document:

    DETAILS OF COVER:
Cover starts: 17/05/2005 Cover ends: 16/05/2006
Your policy covers you in Europe for up to 90 days in any single year and for a maximum of 21 days in any single trip

    Hi,
Tried two days running to book with quotelinedirect for breakdown cover, but each time I hit an error on their server.

I email them after the first instance. No reply.

If they can't keep a server up & running. Or respond to my email. Why should I believe they'll respond if I need them in deepest europe with a duff fanbelt or whatever.

Finally booked my breakdown cover with another company.

    Roger...

Why? Because they are not the provider. Europ Assist is actually the company that responds to breakdown calls.

Hi, just thought I'd point you to a previous European breakdown cover thread in this section which I updated yesterday - under this heading, a bit further down. I found two really cheap quotes, one from Vehicle REscue Direct and the other via https://www.insureandgo.com - £34 and £26 respectively for 2 weeks' European cover. insureandgo use Europ Assistance, and vehicle rescue use Axa. I had occasion to claim on our vehicle rescue direct policy (car broke down the day we were leaving) and can vouch for their bona fides - we got a brand new hire car for 2 weeks. Their call centre's a bit disorganised though!
