50% VED is quite complicated to claim and can only be done by post... https://www.gov.uk/financial-help-disabled/vehicles-and-transport scroll down to Vehicle tax reduction

I doubt the DVLA and DWP speak to each other so the 'changeover' period won't get flagged up to the revenue cameras.

The V5C tax class will change to reflect the different class

Interestingly - unlike the Vehicle Tax exemption for HRM DLA/PIP there's no mention of "The vehicle must be registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name. It must only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs. It can’t be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use."

I thought Blue Badges are automatic entitlement on a PIP mobility points score of 8 +.

I did not know that thank's, so who informed you and does this mean you are un taxed for a while till you send the information to DVLA, If so it is going to create a lot of confusion. Have you noticed the few post's in between us do not seem to be about what our thread is about.

Sorry, only just logged back in.
No one informed us, it was only when I rang DVLA to question why I could not tax online as the options to tick did not cover our circumstances.

If they had then I would have just paid and assumed that was correct but the man I spoke to seemed amazed that there was no mention of the reduced rate on the letter. He said he knew there was a 50% reduction but did not know how many points were needed to qualify and told me to ring the PIP office which I did.

They told me that 8 points or over qualify. I then rang DVLA again as the only way to apply is by post and I wanted to clarify what they needed. There is a form you print off online and its very simple to fill in but you need to send away your MOT and certificate of entitlement. The most annoying thing is that you cannot pay with your card details. It is strictly cheque or postal order only which is annoying.

You are not covered unless your application is processed before the last date of DLA payment.

In our case the tax would have run out in November but as t last date of DLA payment is April 12th then our car is not taxed from that date. They told me they take 7-10 working days so we may be a couple of days without a car.

Seems ludicrous that you cant get it online or at the post office and even more ridiculous that you have to use such an old form of payment.

And yes, the threads do take on a life of their own and go off tangent!
  • But that wasn't the point that the truth made. He stated why give free car tax on cars that cost a lot of money, which are not an expense based on disability. Disabled people do not require range rovers etc, so why get the high tax discounted.

That's all he said. Yet four people have liked the ridiculous vitriolic post but atrix which is angry at things the truth didn't even say...

I don't know why you quoted me marliepanda ...i wasn't responding about anything other than your comment that car tax is not an additional cost of disability, with my example that my family would have an additional road tax cost directly due to disability.

I hadn't commented on anything "the truth" had raised.

If a family requires an additional car due to disability then I can totally see the need. Some families can manage with one car, some need two. If you didn't need the corsa as well it'd be different.
  • Plenty of people manage with no car at all. If you need a car because you're disabled, then car tax is a direct consequence of disability.

Many disabled drivers also do hardly any mileage at all, whatever apparently flashy car you think they drive.

The Truth is always banging on at benefit claimants on this forum with prejudice bias views who says something that has a meaning towards bashing benefit claimants. If it was innocent enough why has it been removed?

I covered all bases to prevent a ridiculous reply from him.

Your question "Disabled people do not require range rovers etc, so why get the high tax discounted." is more appropriate question that should be directed to your local MP. As it stands its a benefit that come with the DLA AND PIP and something that shouldn't be directed at the people who claim the benefit and this forum. BTW range rovers can be in the same tax band as other vehicles as it goes by CO2 emmisions these days the mere fact he brought these "high end brands" up was to start a discussion about people on benefits being rich and well off purely being on benefits that they can afford such vehicles. I merely covered all angles so he had nothing to say back thus making him go away.
