Will soon be 15k or so. Mainly 50mph roads.Mortgage - £124,903 Sept 2016-Jan 2017 OP target £1,750/[STRIKE]£1,550[/STRIKE]0 -
You need to factor in depreciation, car tax, insurance, servicing,mpg, replacement of parts, tyres.
Pound for pound, value for money the focus is a good car.
The Audi is a nicer car in my opinion and I'm the type to pay the premium for it but you have to decide if it's worth it to you.
A lot of people buy diesels for the headline mpg figures and low cost of car tax but go in to meltdown when they get hit with big maintenance bills. If your buying a 5 year old diesel factor in the potential cost of egr, dpf and dual mass flywheel failures.0 -

So if you averaged 30mpg on the current car you are spending around £2300 a year on petrol.
If you bought a car that acheived 42.5mpg say you will end up saving £630 a year on fuel.
If you want to drop £8000-£11000 on a "new" car to save £600-£700 on fuel then go for it, but if your next car has a majorish bill in the first few years then it wont be worth it.
If it was me and my money I would buy a 10+ year old 1.9tdi PD engined A4/A6/Golf/Bora/Skoda for £3000 and have £2000 put aside for anything it needed and achieve at least 42.5mpg.0 -
You maybe surprised at how many people think they are saving money by spending £10k on a car to save £100 a year.
How much will an extra 15mpg save you? Not forgetting
the extra expense of a modern diesel if something does go
wrong.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
VAG group 1.9tdi pd best you can find for the money.
(should have change)
Octavia L&K spec.
As others point out changing often does not save money you swap mpg for depreciation.0 -

I had two Mk4 Golfs with the 1.9Tdi PD engine. A 90bhp that consistently did 60mpg and a 150bhp that consistently did 55mpg no matter how enthusiastically driven.You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -

@ £1.02 per ltr 1 gallon will cost £4.59....So:
30mpg = £0.15/mile
45mpg = £0.10/mile
You will save 5p on fuel every mile you drive. Drive 15,000 miles a year and the annual saving is around £750 on fuel.
So one bill for DMF or DPF or faulty injectors or fuel pump will wipe out possible savings. Obviously once one or all of these issues is paid for you should get a few years good running out of the car so that will reduce your issues with depreciation when/if you sell - so you will only get hit for depreciation should you have a total loss claim.0 -
One thing we are getting away from now is the fact the op wants a new car, be it petrol of diesel he's probably going to upgrade anyway, whatever car he buys will depreciate.0
