A purchase requires a transaction, not something that happens to reserve a seat. I thought it was very clear that on UK trains you cannot pay for a seat.

Technically you're correct, however if you reserve a seat and don't get provided it you can get a full refund on that portion of the ticket.

Given that, any train manager should let someone who can demonstrate they have a reservation sit in First Class, because that's far better than the passenger asking for a refund.

Apparently - you only book a space on a train - whether there is a seat in that space or not makes no difference ...??

Wrong, you don't even book a space on a train. Some trains I (try) to catch you could not physically get anyone else on board.

What you are paying for is the right to travel from A to B when there is space. That may not be now, that may not be in an hour, but it will be sometime.

How do they get around a PRE BOOKED ticket with a time of a specific journey it then ?

If you look at terms and conditions the use of a pre-booked service isn't guaranteed. Which is why on some services the opperator will announce that for example booked seats are not being honoured. They can also cancel the train completely in which case the passenger could take the next available train for their ticket type.
