Probably worth establishing what networks will provide acceptable mobile data coverage and speed in the areas your going to visit.

As you are using the SIM for going away, I guess you want a PAYG SIM.

In the UK, these networks allow tethering on PAYG.

    EE
    Giffgaff
    Tesco mobile
    Vodafone

The data prices are similar amongst most networks, usually about 1p per MB.

There is a massive difference between data on networks especially in rural areas.

I camp a fair bit in places like Wales, Devon and Cornwall. Whilst there are exception to the rule in general I would avoid O2 or O2 based MVNO's i.e. Tesco, Giffgaff due to poor data coverage and Giffgaff is just poor for data even when there is coverage.

I'd also double check PAYG prices as Giffgaff is 5p per MB on PAYG unless you buy a goodybag. I tried this and a complete waste of money for tethering.

Another option is buy a PAYG data only sim that includes xGB or data that can be used over x months. Swap sims (or use a spare phone as a mifi) when tethering is needed. I think Three do a £10 1GB that lasts a month, £16 3GB that lasts 3 months or a £30 12GB that lasts 12 months. There may be similar bundles from EE which is the other network with good rural data coverage.

EE is the best value for PAYG data SIM's. On eBay, you can buy a 6GB EE SIM for £14.99 which is about £2.49 per GB.

On PAYG at the rate of 1p/MB, it costs £10 for 1GB.. so it's much better value using a data only SIM. Especially if you are going to be watching videos on your tablet, you'll want to get the value of £2.49 per GB instead of paying £10 per GB.

  • I'm on 3 payg with the £20 monthly add on giving unlimited data, I tether to connect my laptop, fire TV stick and PS4. My total data usage for phone use and tethering is usually between 70-80gb a month.

It's going up to £25 a month though from this month for the unlimited data. :(

When reading Idontlikeusernames post, keep in mind that Three doesn't allow tethering on PAYG. They only allow tethering on contract plans.
  • I'm on 3 payg, not a contract. Been tethering for over a year with no issues.
