  • Not an April fool for me unfortunately. Here is another case from an eBay buyer:

I returned a garbage item that I had purchased to seller. eBay confirmed:

    Send the item back
The seller is responsible for return shipping charges. Contact the seller for a return shipping label. If they can't provide one, you can purchase a label, and we'll ask the seller to reimburse you.

After I paid CAN$14.01 postage to return item to seller and refund received via PayPal for main item but NOT for return shipping charges that seller had to pay according to eBay.

And when I went back to eBay return process page this is now eBay untrue message:

    This return is now completed
The seller refunded C $52.49 to your original payment method in PayPal. You don't need to return this item to the seller - you can
keep the item. PayPal transaction 3XL73845WT630323A

And eBay has blocked all the communication doors to contact eBay on this subject.

    Any one has a solution?

Mine is very similar and eBay CS didn't help.

International returns are not included in ebay return process

That page appears to be referring to international change of mind returns.

OP, if you pay the money to return it tracked eBay won't refund this and nor will the seller (judging by their attitude).

The item is worthless to to the seller and they should simply refund.

Take a photo of what you received, add it to the return and ask the seller to provide you with a label for returning as it will cost you more than the item did to return yourself.

If it's going to cost more to return tracked than you paid that avenue is out the window regardless so when the option of "Ask us to step in and help" appears, raise the return to eBay and they'll very likely refund you (from either their pocket or the sellers).

Sellers having to pay return postage is a new thing eBay have brought in so it doesn't surprise me there are a few kinks still in the system.

Normally in the case of a return (before this came about) you would have had to pay the return costs - so I think it's a case of if the seller is refusing eBay have done their part and are washing their hands of it.

Basically, you're screwed. Can you escalate the case anywhere to say that the seller is refusing to pay return costs and it costs more than the item to send it back?

Not much you can do by the sound of it that isn't going to result in you being out of pocket, you could send it back in spite and take the return costs (and forking out for the return postage but the seller would have to refund the item amount)...or take it on the chin and leave a negative in the process.

When an item isn’t returned to the seller

In some cases, we may not require that an item be returned to the seller. In these situations we refund the buyer and may seek to reimbursement from the seller if, for example:
    • The seller chooses not to accept a return request or provide or fund a return postage label.

    With regards to return labels:

Either we generate a return postage label or the seller can provide a label. We add the cost of an eBay generated label to the seller’s monthly eBay invoice. When a return postage label is made available to the buyer and/or and the buyer chooses to purchase a separate label, the buyer won’t be refunded by eBay for the cost of the label.

    Thanks all for your help!
The help from ebay was fantastic! The customer service guy told me not to post the item. If the seller hadn't paid the return costs in five working days they would step in. They said, as you guys did NOT to pay myself! The trouble is this is not clear on the returns process. It implies that if the seller does not pay, you must, or you wont get your refund! Had the postage been less I would have returned without question and been out of pocket!
Ebay also agreed to contact the seller and remind them they had to pay the return costs
The seller sent me a few abusive messages claiming the item was as described, despite them having lopped off the poor dog's head on the photo. They then accused me of something called "friendly fraud" where I was trying to get the item for free. After that I stopped responding to their messages.
Out of the blue they refunded me then blocked me. The refund stated I did not need to return the item.
My only dilemma now is whether to post negative feedback as the whole transaction was stressful. On the other hand I did get my money back, it would only be to warn others if they complain about their photos being mangled the seller will get rude. To be honest I'd rather just move on. I don't want any more abuse from them.
  • Glad to hear you got it resolved without losing out on the postage.
