They are okay maybe for short term but they're not the answer.

I went through a really bad time and felt like sh'ite years ago and didn't want to go down the chemical route. I got some self help books and positive affirmation tapes and read and played the tapes every night. They were subliminal so got through to my unconscious and after a few weeks my outlook changed and I began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. From thereon I became more and more positive and rose above the depression and self loathing.

    Good luck.

They may not be the answer for you, and I'm glad you found other ways to feel better, but for some people they are literally life saving.

Plus one for this. I have a lesser known form of OCD and it is utter hell to live with. I have never actually been suicidal, but have in the past had thoughts of 'it would be much easier to not wake up one day'. I did manage for a few years without any meds and did so quite well. However I have needed mine for a while now and am on the highest dose at present. They help me feel 'normal' and able to function mentally (most of the time - I have ME amd Fibro too so that can interfere with things).

That's not to say other things won't help of course and doing things like going to the beach if it makes you happy is fantastic, but please don't consider reducing the meds without your GP. And if you reduce and feel worse, there is no shame in upping them again. As others say, no one would bat an eyelid if they were told to take insulin or thyroid meds, mental health medication is just as important, where needed.

This. Agree with BW's post also, they correct a chemical imbalance.

Good luck OP - I really hope you feel better in yourself soon. Lots of love.
