    1. I didn't endanger any lives

    Yet you also say:
I really did try and keep to the speed limit as i was terrified of animals jumping out.

So you endangered your own life because your speed limited your reaction times. You endangered the lives of others because you increased the likelihood of swerving into another car at speed if an animal emerged.

What you just said literally made no sense and I've no idea why you referenced 2 separate things i said as if they contradict each other, which they don't. I didn't endanger lives because i kept to the speed limit, except for when i accidentally went over, as any human would after 7 hours of driving. I'm sure you've done the same. I said i was being cautious about animals, how exactly does this endanger lives? Surely it's the opposite?
I wouldn't have swerved if an animal came out, for the exact reason i mentioned. I was consciously looking out for them, and i know perfectly well that the rule is to brake, not swerve.

So again, not quite sure what point you were trying to make.

If I remember correctly, in Victoria you only need to exceed the speed limit by 2 kmh to attract a fine and points.

Don't Australian cars have cruise control?

Wouldn't have a clue how to use cruise control? My car in the UK doesn't have it, so I'm not entirely sure what it does?

Yeh, this is what I've heard, but according to people on this post, I've endangered lives and should be ashamed of myself, as if they've never gone 1mph over the speed limit.

Thank you for the link :)

  • Thank you, that's really helpful. The car hire company have already charged $80 admin fee, which I'll have to pay, but it's good to know the enforcers can't go back to them for the money, and hopefully not my friend either.

I wouldn't assume that the money can't be taken from your friend's credit card.
If the matter does get as far a court hearing (and I've no idea if this is the case in Australia), there may be a possibility that the court decides that you were not in fact driving but simply that your name was put forward as you and your friend knew that it was highly unlikely that you would be chased for the money.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying or implying that this is what happened, just that the police or court may say that it did as naming the wrong driver is something that happens all over the world.

Your inability to accept accountability for your actions is pretty poor.

Speed limits usually exist for a reason.

I accept that i went over the speed limit, i don't accept that £200-300 fine for each infringement (one minutes after the other) is appropriate for a few km over. I'm sure you've never ever gone a mile per hour over the limit, but if you did, and you were fined such an amount, I think you'd be similarly miffed.

Anyway thank you to those that gave me advice, it was very helpful and put my mind to rest a bit.

Those that wish to continue debating whether I'm an awful person for speeding feel free to PM me.

You went over the speed limit, got caught and are now crying.

having said that if you dont ever want to return and you are 100% confident they wont chase your friend and or the hire company wont pay it (not sure you can be confident of either by asking on here) then dont pay it.

I got a very large fine for speeding in the USA and because i go every year I payed it, it was way more than the equivalent fine would have been if i had been caught in the UK but thats the realities of breaking laws abroad
