I'm surprised people are spelling it with a "z". I would say the most common way to spell it would be Susie. Replacing the "s" with a "z" is usually an american way of spelling.

Depends whether it's Suzanne or Susanne.

The Suzie in our family has a z and and ie.

For reasons I don't want to go into, I don't want to keep my first name and simply shorten it. I want to change it officially.

I think this is the bit I'm having trouble getting my head around. Don't know about anybody else :/

Do you need to do anything to change your name, can't you just tell prople as from now call me ........ whatever.
I changed my name. My Mum was married twice and as a child my surname was the same as her first marriage, then at 11 when i started Grammar school seemed the ideal time to change. But i don't think we did anything. I've still got my birth certificate with the wrong name but never had any problems.
But here i am at 62 and some of the older neighbours who knew me as a child still call me by my name then.

  • I have found (personal experience) that people called "Susanne" or "Susannah" shorten to "Susie" but people called "Suzanne" tend to shorten to "Suzie".

Changing a name (by deed poll or any other way), never changes the name shown on your birth certificate.
  • I have the long version of my name on all my paperwork, I've always been called the shorter version though even when being told off growing up. It can be confusing at the doctors or whatever when they call my name and I have to remember that's me, but if you just tell the person you're talking to to call you suzey or whatever that takes 2 seconds.

I have jobs that require security vetting, I have a friend who changed their middle names and it causes them to have delays every single time to do extra checks to confirm they are the same person. So I guess it depends if you have anything similar, could it cause you unintended consequences? Why do you want it changed on paper?

May depend on the age of the individual - I know a 20-something Susan who preferred Suzie.

Either way - add me to the queue for finding out why Suzey wants it on paper... and why she wants to know if she will lose her maiden name. Hope there's not an uncomfortable divorce being planned.
I need to think of something new here...
