even 20-30 years ago the only speakers that came with a 2 prong connector. were the cheaper end of the market, with this amp it would be criminal to use even the cable off those.
Treat yourself to a decent set...and don't forget decent quality cable.

Many years ago I bought a very good very expensive hi-fi. They persuaded me to buy some very expensive speaker cables. After a few months the cassette player (I told you it was along time ago) started distorting so I called the experts in. They claimed they couldn't hear any difference, there was nothing wrong. I sent it back to the manufacturers who happily repaired it under warranty. So these "experts" who claimed that good speaker cables made all the difference couldn't even tell if a unit was distorting the sound.
Mains cable is fine for speakers.

Swap the speaker cables at the amplifier end, left to right and vice versa, leaving the speakers physically where they are.

If the silent speaker 'moves', the amplifier is faulty on one side. If the silent one stays put, the speaker is faulty. I assume they were both working before?

Set up AM/FM, you say? Do you have a suitable AM or FM aerial? I thought you were buying this for Internet Radio use?

i was, but for some reason i thought it had wifi, i hadnt read closely enough but i can get internet radio if i connect with the ethernet cable,

it comes with a small internal aeriel. i may as well set up the AM/FM as its available tho ultimately i will mainly listen to internet radio.

yes i think both speakers were working before so will try the switch just in case its the amp tho that seems unlikely

my friend had to rush off but she did say she may not have connected that one a securely as the other so suggested i tweak it and see

As long as the metal of the cable is in contact with the metal of the speaker terminal on the amp, you should be OK. Tighten the plastic nut down on the metal core of the cable only, not on the plastic sheath

I wonder what impedance rating the speakers are and what impedance the amp is expecting to see?

its odd as both speakers work for the turntable but only one for the cd player - so does that make u think the problem is with the cd player and not the amp?

there is another issue. its enabled so that u can listen via headphones but when i put them in the music still comes out the speakers. makes me think i have to push some button or set it up in some way but i cant find anywhere that says i have to do that

Swap the left & right phono plugs at either the CD end or the amp end - does the sound now come out of the other channel?

When listening with headphones turn the speakers off on the front panel or on the remote.
