Rayleigh, Essex ??

We are thinking of moving to the Rayleigh (and surrounds) area of Essex. Neither of us are particularly knowledgeable about that part of Essex as at the moment we are in Gidea Park.

We don't have kids so are not interested in school catchment areas but I work in Liverpool St/London which is why I want to stay on that rail-line.

Any views and/or opinions - good or bad - would be of great help.

Thanks.

Shenfield, Hutton area is very nice and only 22 minutes fast train from Shenfield to Liverpool street station. Low crime rate, nice people, Schools are good I know that not important to you but it reflects on the kind opf parents in the area and everyone generally wants a good standard of life. Surroundings areas are also good, parks, lots of interesting places to visit. Good shops in Chelmsford, Brentwood High street not to bad range of shops, Theatre etc

I would love to live Shenfield way but it may be a tad too pricey for what we want. We can get around 370K for our semi so would ideally like to buy a small detached house/bungalow somewhere for like price or hopefully less and from what I have seen, Rayleigh etc. seems to be coming up with the goods !

hi i'm from rayleigh, lived here for 8 years, sold our house but ideally want to still stay here, prices shooting up and are in keeping with brentwood, upminster, shenfield etc. depends on what you want, if you want nightclubs places to go, rayleigh is not the place to be, however its small enough to be friendly and town center is small but enough to look around on a saturday. i love the place.

however there is a possibility that another 1800 homes could be built off a road called raweth lane, govenment has sold off greenbelt land!! other than that ask away. Rayleigh hasn't got any bad areas as such, there are not many flats or council housing (apparently many of the new homes will be key workers and low incomes)

i actually work in romford and do the daily commute, normally by train but sometimes by car. can be bad some days but mostly ok

  • I'm another Rayleigh resident, I moved here when I left home 17 years ago and I've never looked back! In fact I've had 3 houses here.

It's just as stolt says, and also within easy distance of Basildon/Southend/Chelmsford/Lakeside etc.

I have a large 4 bedroom detached house in a quiet road and it's valued at approx £350,000. You should easily find something with a budget of £370,000. Good luck! :)

 You're kidding! And I thought that 350k was a bit top heavy, perhaps it's worth more, it was last valued a year ago. And to think we bought it new for £126,000...

Sorry, we're not for sale! :D We've been here for 11 years and we love the house.

Hope you manage to find something soon.

might be worth checking, but then if your not moving its not going to make any difference to you. I have looked for near on a year and rayleigh is quickly creeping up. not sure whereabouts you are but i you are on one of the newer estates the prices are sorting themselves out.
