BT Ultra HD Sport on non UHD TV

I recently got BT TV with their new Ultra HD receiver (along with BB).

I have an old (10 year) plasma TV that I know is not 4K / UHD and so never expected to receive BT Ultra HD sport in UHD.

However is there anybody out there in the same situation (non UHD TV) who also has a BT Ultra HD receiver who can still watch the BT Ultra HD sport channel albeit not actually in UHD.

If I select the channel it says I'm not subscribed but BT have confirmed that I am subscribed. They have also given me conflicting information, one phone call saying I should receive ultra HD and another saying I can't as I haven't got a UHD TV.

I've read a review on Techradar that said:

"Incidentally, you can watch the 4K channel, downscaled to 1080p on a non-4K screen. For anyone not wanting to buy a 4K screen yet it may be worth investing in the box before buying one, giving you noticeably superior pictures to Full HD channels."

I don't want to go out and buy a UHD TV and then find out I could never receive UHD anyway.

Incidentally my BB speed is mid 30's Mbps so that should not be a problem.

Just to say again I know I can't receive full UHD, I just want to know if I should still able to watch the BT Ultra sport channel.

To watch in BT Sport in 4K Ultra HD you'll need a compatible screen with at least one HDMI 2.0 input that can handle HDCP 2.2 content protection and a picture resolution of 2160p (50Hz).
Most 2015 4K TV screens will play nice with the BT Sport UHD channel but many older models won't so you should check first on BT's website if in doubt.
Incidentally, you can watch the 4K channel, downscaled to 1080p on a non-4K screen. For anyone not wanting to buy a 4K screen yet it may be worth investing in the box before buying one, giving you noticeably superior pictures to Full HD channels.

I think the confusion arose when the OP stated he had a ten year old Plasma screen he wanted to watch the 4K channel on, obviously not in 4K.

Sorry I thought the OP was going to ask but didn't. Here goes...

Many/most Modern 2015 TVs today carry the HDMI 2.0 format and can handle HDCP 2.2 but there are many that won't carry both (over the same HDMI) and certainly not a 10 year old plasma or even models before 2015.

Compliant HD TVs can be hooked up to a YouView UHD 4K box no problem, but the output has to be set to 1080i/1080p to display a picture. And those that have done it have stated that (due to superior processing chips) its the best HD picture they have ever seen in their lives.

But the OP has a second problem. They stated they have a BB speed in the mid 30's range and thats not fast enough for UHD. The minimum speed required is 45Mbps. Which is broken down as 29 + 8 + 8 = 45, which equates to 1 UHD channel plus 2 HD.

    Hope that clears it up.

Thanks for the replies. It was the review on Tech Radar that JJ Egan mentioned that prompted my question.

From the little research I've done, some televisions advertised as 4K will not display BT UHD (Toshiba according to BT) along with some other early UHD televisions that were sold.

Now if I could just convince the Wife that we need a new television.........
