    That's a good point Loskie and one that I never though of.

    I should have as a mate went from a mk3 Mondeo (my old one) to a nice diesel CR-V (last of shape with spare on the boot)

    As one of his dogs mobility began to suffer it was a struggle to get him in and out, not a problem for the younger dogs.

    He now has a Astra estate on a 55 plate that we went to auction to buy. Cost £1500 (ish) is a 1.6 petrol in Design spec, he has had to change the Lamda Sensor and just servicing. Does well over 40mpg on the open road.

    I don't think the height of the boot was much lower, but enough to help.

    If we are talking estates though I only have one suggestion other than a Mondeo or similar.

    And that would be a Subaru Legacy, maybe an Outback, but not the current shape which is ugly but one from 2004 till late 2009 is my preferred model.
