we have just filled in the template letter from this website that asks the companies for our account and insurance details for closed accounts.
All you really need to do is ring up those 13 financial institutions and ask them directly if they have any record of you having PPI. If customer facing staff have no record (and you have none yourself) then you'll have to decide whether it is worthwhile paying £10 per institution for Subject Access Requests (SAR) which will provide the results of a much more thorough search.
I wouldn't send any letters until you've made a prior informal query by telephone.

Do note that even if you had PPI, it's not automatically mis-sold. You will have to provide valid reasons in order for the insurance to be refunded to you.

Resist the temptation to complain that any policy must have been mis-sold just because you can't remember it..

Thanks for this and to Amersall for getting back to me so quickly, I won't send all the letters today then, I shall instead phone the companies but I am just wondering how open they will to telling me if we had PPI with our accounts? Do they HAVE to tell us if we did had PPI?

I am aware that we will have to have a valid reason for being mis-sold and where we did have PPI it will be due to either being told we had to take it out or not knowing anything about it.

    Thanks again! :T

Being told you have to have it or, not knowing are not reasons for mis sell.
With a credit card, it will have shown on every statement.
With a loan, it is on the agreement that you signed.

Reasons for mis sell could be
You had no need of the insurance, eg you had life insurance, only worked part time less than 16 hours so would invalidate the insurance or, you could repay the card/loan in any event.

The same reasons above for a loan, plus the PPI may have been added on to the agreement and you repaid it over the loan term with interest, this would be Single Premium and a reason for mis sell, it is possible the Citi one was.

If you don't trust the bank to be truthful, you could send the request for info and enclose £10, this may be a waste of money, it is your call.

Give them a call and see what results you get first.

Another quick question: we both had capital one credit cards and I am sure we were missold PPI for these. On our credit report there was account details showing when the account started and ended but the account numbers were not fully displayed, just lots of ***'s and the last few numbers of the account, would this be enough info us to put on the FOS form and get them sent off?

Anything that appears on your credit report will be easily accessible to staff at the institutions concerned. However, as above, call Capital One and get the full account number and details before filling in any complaint form. You say you are sure you were mis-sold PPI on these cards, but if you don't know for sure, then how can you complain? You'd look like a chancer if you complained about a non-existent policy..

Well, they are mis-selling reasons, but they are very weak ones which are very likely rejected.

It's a myth fostered by claim companies that PPI was somehow added without the knowledge and agreement of the customer. If bootcutboy has PPI he has no knowledge of, he's either simply forgotten about it or didn't read the credit agreements he will have signed.

Yes, this makes it very hard to complain about not knowing about any PPI. The insurance amount due would have shown on a separate line on every monthly statement where the account had a balance.

Thanks Moneyineptitude (a very apt name) very useful responses. I will call up the banks in question this morning and get my info, and I will of course make sure I have good reason to complain about the mis-selling as I do not want to appear a complete donut.

Hi all, We have heard back from Capital One to confirm that my wife previously had PPI on her credit card account, she was told she would need to take this out and was very much pushed into doing so, so we will be claiming. Is the next step to just send the FOS form off to them? What is the best wording to use on the claim form to ensure that our claim will be taken seriously and has the best chance of being refunded please? Thanks a lot.

    The procedure is detailed here;

Just be honest in your complaint and don't be tempted to copy and paste.
