I am veggie so have never tried it, but a friend fries cabbage with smoked bacon it is apparently common so will be on the internet.

I steam all veg and hate it boiled, they are not expensive mine is for use on the hob and I paid around £10 so might be something you would want to consider.

I don't like frozen veg apart from peas and sweetcorn, will buy spinach to use in curry if fresh is expensive though

Thanks Happy :) The problem with buying a steamer is that i have the tiniest kitchen with only 3 cupboards, all of which are full. I have a severe lack of space.

Cabbage with bacon sounds yummy! Will search online for that one. Thanks :)

I have tried peas, but only boiled...i dont suppose there is anything else i can do with them? I didnt know peas were edible raw! .

try mange tout! .. baby pea pods.. and they are quite sweet.. excellent for stir fries and salad! and just eating because they are nommish!!

And I cannot believe you have never tried peas straight from the pod!.. you are missing out.. they are mana from heaven! .. I used to buy those with my sweetie money as a child!

I grate courgette into bolognese sauce and lasagne and most mincey things.

I rather like green beans too.. I warm them through rather than boil their guts .. broad beans are a bit woody flavoured and string beans are stringy.

You can steam veggies in a microwave quite simply, or over boiling water with a metal or rattan type steamer basket.

Fresh peas at the height of the season are better than anything else raw, but as the season goes they deteriorate rapidly so you're better with frozen at that point.

Try gently steaming or even saut!ing sprouts (on their own or with a little butter), it's a revelation compared to overboiled wilting nasty things they can be. I won't touch frozen sprouts unless I've frozen them myself.

Most veggies can be eaten raw expecting potatoes and cassava pretty much. Xxx

Thank you both..i didnt know i could use a metal colander type thing to steam! I have only ever used a proper steamer (before i moved to this shoe box of a kitchen!!).
  • Fry savoy cabbage with sliced onion, bacon and garlic.

Make cabbage rolls basically cabbage leaves filled with mince or vegetable rice put into an oven dish an pour over a tomato sauce made from tomatoes, garlic and herbs, sprinkle with cheese then cook in the oven. Lots of different recipes for them on the internet.

I used to crumble up a cooked garlic baguette and serve it with veggies and the children wolfed it down.

Garlic butter, mushroom or cheese sauce also helps
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I am definitely going to have to try peas from the pod..you make it sounds almost as good as chocolate :rotfl: I am definitely going to have to print out a seasonal veg chart so i can see what to try and when, to get the best flavour.

Broad beans...i have a bag (frozen) that i bought a few months ago and tried them several times but they dont taste of anything at all.
Again, i am wondering if i should try fresh instead.

String beans...are those the same as runner beans/green beans?

I actually prefer raw veg to chocolate.

yes kind of but chewy and stringy.. green beans are best imo.

I am a total child when it comes to new veg so I get how hard this is!

Just a thought.. the stalky bits on cauliflower and broccoli.. they are the best bits.. I chop and eat those raw.. I hate the florets but will eat the stalks! or I grate those and add to other cooked dishes, soups, casseroles etc..

I too dislike veg, unless in soup or cooked Chinese or Indian style

I really like green beans in tomato sauce, easy as a side dish while cooking a roast. Something like this

Crispy seaweed is lovely, only problem I have is that I can't stop eating it until it's finished! Most recipes say to use any dark cabbage, spring greens or kale. Not always possible for me to get, so have used Chinese cabbage quite successfully instead. I also sometimes substitute Thai 7 spice powder rather than 5 spice, just for a wee bit more kick.

Couple of different ways to make in oven and wok.

I love mashed potatoes with cabbage, just quickly stir fry cabbage for about a minute, so that it's still got a nice bite and stir into mashed potatoes.
Agree with others about steaming green veg, flavour is so much better. I
also love steamed potatoes, takes a bit longer though than boiling.
