Spring cleaning

  • I do. :)
I like to be organised all the time...we'd never manage both working full time (different days to let the kids have 4 days at home each week) without being organised! BUT, it's wonderful to let the school holidays bring lots of fun, family time & the additional chance to organise & do any jobs that don't get done on a weekly basis.

Throughout the school year/seasons these jobs change accordingly, but here's some:
Moving all furniture and hoovering under/behind (our bed is always a dusty shocker!)
    Wiping down kitchen units
    Oiling the kitchen work surfaces
    Wiping down skirting boards/radiators
    cleaning curtains
    cleaning windows/window frames
    Cleaning doors/door seals/steps
    Replanting pots/planters and hanging baskets
    Pruning trees/hedges
    Cleaning the garden table/chairs
Cleaning garden bits & pieces for the kids: tables, chairs, sand tray, water tray, play table...this list is a bit endless!
I love the 'clean' feeling of having a bit of a school holiday binge-clean.

Crikey Ding Dong. I felt tired just reading your list. :)
  • Hehe...because we only do it when we're both off work it is shared between the two of us! I wouldn't manage to juggle the little folk and doing any of it when it's just me at home!

I am interested to know exactly what jobs people would class as spring cleaning, just being nosy really but its got me thinking!

If I did do a spring clean, (which I don't) I would empty the drawers in the bedroom and vacuum them out. Our Wardrobe is built into a deep alcove so I would get everything out of there and clean. Clean in the kitchen cupboards.

Actually thinking about it I would do jobs outside as well, like sweep under the plastic greenhouse and in the cold frame. Sweep out the shed. I'm more likely to do these things than vacuum the drawers.

I used to work with someone who did this before she went on holiday, "cupboards and corners" she called it!

I just do jobs when needed. Kitchen work tops daily, units wiped down every couple of days, Hoover through weekly, wash kitchen and bathroom floors weekly or more often if necessary.

Washing every other day for some sort of load. Windows - when the sun shows them up.

owing to clapped out joints the dusting I do has to be above my knees and below my shoulders Anything else one of my grandsons will whip round for me My eldest DD does a real thorough one for me when I am away on holiday.Mostly my house is fairly tidy anyway as because its small and I can't abide clutter its usually fairly clear for most of the time
DD does the stair carpet hoovering for me as I have a stair lift and would struggle on my hands and knees.Things I can reach gets done what i can't either DD or one of the boys do it for me.I am quite relaxed about dust though and a quick flit around normally sorts it all.I just hated polishing from when I was a little girl and had to 'do' the brasses (Mum had a collection ) I swore I'd never have the blessed things in my own house and I never have.I used to enjoy polishing the parquet flooring in our house when I was a little girl as I had an old pair of sock over my slippers and used to skate around the wooden tiles in the lounge. This room was only used on high days and holidays as it was too big to heat comfortably. But Christmas and New Year the floor sparkled with my skating :):):) Only job I liked in our barn of a house Big edwardian place which was beautiful but blooming cold in the winter. There was also a lovely mahogany stair bannister that was brilliant for sliding down so that always got a good polish :):):)

I just do jobs when needed.

I usually do something like cleaning the oven on a weekend I am home. All jobs are prioritised under the pressure of need. There is always something which I pigeon hole under home maintenance! I don't like the feeling of being out of control so I just plug away at it. Incase anyone turns up unexpectedly more than anything else and then it is amazing what you can get done in a short time.

But I have just hired a Rug Doctor machine which has had to wait until now so that the carpets can dry. If I put the heating on and leave a few windows open to air they should dry. So this is my Spring clean as it has had to wait until now.

I usually just clean as I go as I find it easier that way. I will take down the curtains and launder them. I usually only do that twice a year.

  • The nearest thing to Spring cleaning that happens here is the living room rug change.
I have washable woolly rugs down in winter, and woven cotton ones in summer, both types get washed and changed when they get manky, and usually the laminate floor gets a hoovering and mopping at same time, but when it`s time for the seasonal change I do a more thorough job of it.
As the woolly ones go in WM and the cotton ones go to launderette (heavy when wet) I delay the changeover till I`m convinced the weather is better.
As soon as I get the cotton rugs out of storage the weather always seems to turn wet again though!

Windows get cleaned when evenings are lighter, curtains left open, and we notice we can`t see out very well.....
