Bookies paid me twice, is it my money?

Hi all,

I've won some money at an online bookies and they must have made an error as I've received 2 payments via chaps for the amount i won.

They've not contacted me about the issue. Can i just keep it or are there legal ramifications?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

    No.

    Let them know.

They've got 6 years to chase you for it.

If they charged you twice would you chase them for the money back?

It isn't your money, they made a mistake.

You might as well call them about it, pay them and move on with your life

    No its not your money.

Until a few years ago gambling wins or losses were not enforceable - ie if a bookie welshed on you or you had a bet promising to drop the stake in later on you couldnt take the bookie to court and they couldn't take you to court either.

But it's now the same as any other debt / gain.

If I were you I would keep my head down and keep quiet about it, the longer it goes on, the less likely they are to ask you for it.

And even if they do, you can say you have spent it and repay it at £5 a week.

If you are a regular on-line bettor then i would pay it back once asked .
Saves them putting a block on your account and you could find it difficult to open new accounts .
Alternative is they may send around Mr Sabini .

If that's the one that died in 1950 it's not a threat I would be too worried about :).

I just love these sorts of posts, if it was the other way round I'm sure it would be the end of the world; angry phone calls, accusations, legal threats, letters sent recorded delivery, moaning about refund times and the obligatory "I've gone overdrawn because of this" whinge , blah blah blah....

But, no. As soon as it's the other way around it's "can I keep this"

It's a criminal offence to keep money that doesn't belong to you. You could keep quiet about it and plead ignorant if you are found out but as you are posting this you know it doesn't belong to you.

    it's call "Retaining wrongful credit".
