Met Chief says that banks shouldn't necessarily refund due to fraud

I don't choose to have a bank account I am forced to have one! If it was my choice I wouldn't have one at all. I do online banking and they think it's okay to take £30 from me when a direct debit can't come out because my money goes in the next day and then they take another £30 because of going overdrawn and I don't have an overdraft! What am I paying for? No person had to do anything, no cost was involved yet it cost me £60. In my eyes that is no different to someone else stealing money from me. The bank are responsible for the money so yes of course they should pay it back if it's taken and also if they take it!0

Well as it is you who are 'stealing' from the bank in the first place by arranging for a DD to go out with insufficient money in the account when the DD is taken.....if I was you I'd keep rather quiet.
Alternatively you could move to a European country where it is a criminal offense to let your account go into an unauthorized overdraft and those more used to the cavalier fashion with which the UK population treat their bank accounts tend to get a rather unpleasant surprise.0 -

Some people carry card pins in their wallet with the cards , others have a sheet of paper or book by their PC with logins and passwords , maybe even security question answers
Surely that's negligent on their part and not the banks , if you leave your front door unlocked or a window open then most insurance companies Will not pay upEx forum ambassador

Absolutely, and that's exactly the point I made in the thread on this in discussion time.
You'd be amazed at how lax people are with their security then cry fraud when someone steals their money.
People in the other thread were comparing it to burglary and mugging and accusing banks of victim blaming.
It's more akin to popping your wallet on a table in a public place and leaving it behind.
If someone has lost money to a fraudster through NO fault of their own then banks should and do refund.
If someone has been negligent with their security information then I see no reason for the bank to refund. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

Check the dates your direct debits will come out and change them if you have to, but make sure your money is in. You wouldn't go in a shop and get to the counter and tell them you will be back tomorrow to pay for it once your wage as gone into your account would you?
Also, there are plenty of bank accounts offering choice and a different charging structures. You signed for the account with the terms and conditions. When you don't follow the terms and conditions, don't complain someone is stealing your money.0 -
I hope he gets done for a few thousand k.
My uncle recently fell victim of a drive by download/browser hijack which I believe installed keylogging software because 2 separate credit cards he had were compromised almost immediately.
Anti-virus which is the phrase that keeps getting parrotted on its own is not a comprehensive solution to cr-p like that getting on your machine. Having an up to date browser (e.g. with something like NoScript for Firefox) will be more effective and killing off swiss cheese total rubbish like Adobe Flash.
Anyway, he learnt his lesson so that copper will be happy and he had to pay a computer expert to recover stuff he hadn't back up after the inevitable OS re-install.0 -

Even more effective is using a safe operating system such as the linux based ones like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin, LXLE.0 -

But that's his fault for not having update software and antivirus!. That's like not having a door on your house and then you only realise it's insecure when your stuff gets stolen!.
He also should be regularly backing up important data so that he won't have to pay people when it gets lost.0
