Can I give 30 days notice, 30 days BEFORE end of contract?

My 2-year phone contract with EE ends in about 40 days and according to the website I have to give 30 days notice if I don't want to start a new contract.

Can I give notice in about 10 days, in order to coincide with the end of the contract? Or do I have to wait until it expires and THEN give notice, making it, in effect a 25-month contract?

Thank you

The contract does not end in 40 days. The minimum term ends. After this date the contract turns into a 30 day rolling one and carries on as it has in the past until you decide to change.

If you wanted to cancel the contract at the end of the minimum term you would have to contact EE 30 days before that date to give the required notice. If you want to change provider and keep your number you don't request to cancel, you just request your PAC and the contract will terminate when the number is ported.

Thanks for that. Sorry to be a dunce with this stuff. I'd always been PAYG until getting this phone a couple of years ago, so I'm not familiar with how this works.

I want to keep the phone and get a SIM-only deal that I found at Carphone warehouse. So do I still need to give 30 days notice that I want the PAC, or do I just ask for it round about the time the contract ends?

    It's either a notice or a PAC.
If you get a PAC you must use it before it expires, otherwise the contract goes on.

Thank you. Are you saying that I can use the PAC before the contract expires? Maybe I've misunderstood you. Feel free to talk to me like I'm a three-year-old. I might as well be, where stuff like this is concerned :D

It lasts for 30 days and you can use it any time, but get charged for 30 days regardless (notice period).

You can only give thirty days notice when outside of the minimum term, so you have to wait until that time.

    Completely untrue.

Minimum term expires on 1st May, so I wait until 2nd May and then ask them for the PAC?

When I have the PAC can I then just put the new SIM in the phone and use it (after a few hours?) or do I need to wait 30 days, into early June?

    No

First of all, for using on a different network, the phone has to be not locked or get unlocked.
If it's not locked, you can use it with any SIM at any time regardless of the PAC. The latter is needed to port the old number to the new sim (porting will terminate the old contract as well). For this you must give it to the new provider.

No, but if you port the number before the minimum term expires, you waste money on paying for the old SIM for some time while not being able to use it.

Beware that as you pay for the next billing month in advance, you may be due some refund from the old provider as the billing month isn't necessarily the same as the last month of your minimum term: Phone bills: reclaim unused credit
