Cleaning Chef Whites?

Can anyone off any advice? My son started training to be a chef at college last September, and has been on work experience for 2 weeks.

He come home yesterday with his college chef whites absolutely covered with tandori chicken sauce - he is pretty messy. I've treated the whites with the oxi vanish stuff and used a vanish bar off soap on it too, and soaked them over night, but the stains are as bad as when I started? Today another set the chef whites have BBQ sauce on - grr.

If I can't remove the stains then the last resort is to buy new chef whites which are £30 each as they need to be embroidered.

Any ideas on what may get then tandori sauce or BBQ sauce out? I'm not sure if bleaching it would work having never bleached anything.

Thanks in advance.
2016 is the year I am going to find time for me, and cherish the time I spend with my friends and family.
It is also time to save - Aim £4,000 - So far this year - £230/£4,000

That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Thanks for the link. When I did a search last night that one was not one that appeared, so off to have a read.

    Thank you.

another method to try is something like Biotex or Nappisan. Whites are usually 100% cotton so will take soaking in these - plus a 'boil wash'. if the embroidery isn't colour fast at boil, then soak them twice in fresh solution and wash at the highest recommended temperature.
Let us know which method worked (if any) please? its helpful for newbies with similar problems.
  • I have a friend who is a chef, though probably not quite as messy! She soaks her whites in bio laudry detergent then washes them on the hottest setting in her washing machine. Hope that helps.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

    Thanks for your suggestions.

He has one more day of work experience tomorrow before the Easter break so I will try your various suggestions over the holidsys and report back on what worked. It would be so much easier if chef whites were black for trainees!

I used to leave my ex's whites in the bath overnight with ton of bleach then boil wash the next day.

When I was training I soaked my whites in bio powder overnight. Have you tried rubbing washing up liquid into the stains before washing them on a boil wash. I have found that washing up liquid will lift most stains.

If the Tandoori spice mix has turmeric in it, you may be out if luck as it's a nightmare stain to remove.

Our leather suite was 'treated' with a stain repellent & guaranteed but turmeric stains were specifically excluded.
The key seems to be to 'act fast' but as you've already washed the item, it may be too late.

Anyhow, good luck and please let us know how you get on. :)

I hope the suggestions work but perhaps he should be doing this for himself. It might make him less messy and, if there's any complaints about the state of them, that would be his responsibility.

I used to soak martial art suits in a bath of biological detergent solution overnight. They had embroidered badges on and didn't fade. (They were a pain to dry :( )
I know it seems obvious, but if he asked his instructor for advice it shows that he's taking responsibility for his own actions.;) and he might just get some useful tips :)
