Would you carpet a house?

We don't know if it's a good idea to carpet a house before putting it up for sale. All the carpets need replacing, and the house is being decorated throughout, but would it sell better if it was fully carpeted?(apart from kichen & bathrooms)
Any thoughts on this appreciated, TIA, C.C.L.

When you say it needs re-carpeting, are the carpets dated with old-fashioned patterns, or worn, damaged, dirty or cheap and nasty? If they are really dated or tatty I'd be tempted to put something neutral down, but be wary of putting obviously cheap carpet down in a more expensive house because buyers will notice and will think you may have scrimped on other things. If they are good quality, a good clean can make all the difference.
If it's a ftb type of house, re-carpeting will probably make it an easier sell as the potential buyers will think they won't have to spend a lot of money on flooring.0 -
Personally I hate carpets. If you are buying a house you want to decorate it in the way you like. One person's tasteful stone is another's boring beige. Unless you are selling it to a Buy to let landlord, I cannot see the benefit of carpeting.0

I am of the opinion that a lot of people want something that they can just move in to. Why else would teeny tiny new homes go for such silly prices. It might be worth getting a cheap carpet or two. A few hundred pounds spent is better than losing several thousand off your asking price.
If you go to carpet shops they have end of rolls that are quite cheap.
It would also depend on how quickly you want to sell the house. If you're in a chain it might be worth doing so you can move to your new home quicker.0 -
I do agree - bare floor boards would just put a lot of people off and not everyone likes wood or laminate; I know I don't. Boring but if you use the same carpet throughout it can make the place look bigger. Just don't use a looped pile on stairs and be aware that very cheap polypropylene carpets looks cheap and shiny and can flatten quickly.0

I would say no. i do like carpet but would prefer to choose my own. If you bought cheap nasty carpet just to cover the floor, I couldn't justify pulling it up straight away but wouldn't like it.0

Probably would depending on size and cost - if you don't you can reduce appeal as some people can't see 'potential' and just want everything done for them.
Neutral shades, not too cheap but not expensive, and it's probably of benefit to you in the long run - or people will just say I'll offer you X amount under asking as the carpets need doing (and they'll over price the job)0 -
I hate hate hate carpet. Ours had newish carpet when we moved in. Didn't like the colour, even less excuse to rip it up now0

Is the question "equivalent quality carpet or other floorings?" or "good quality, fresh flooring or battered stained thread-bare mess?"0

You say the house has been newly decorated throughout but it still needs flooring - it seems the job is not finished. I think it would be best to finish the decor by doing the flooring too. It would sell quicker and easier and less likely to have folk saying 'I am only prepared to pay x as it needs new flooring throughout'0 -
Thanks for the replies and your opinions. The house has been rented out for 6 years and we just want it gone. I know when we bought this house it was carpeted with new beige coloured throughout and I hate it, but we couldn't agree on keeping or replacing it. We ended up keeping it and now we would have to empty every room to re-carpet. That's the main reason we can't decide what's best.0
