One could argue this is a civil dispute and nothing to do with the police. However they appear to have taken an interest. Yes, they can contact the finance company to establish ownership and who should have possession. It will most likely be decided the person named and paying the finance should have the car.
Simplest thing would be to hand it back before its reported as stolen and seized by the police when she's on the school run.0 -

I doubt this would have any legal standing because she's got numerous messages from him saying she can have the vehicle outright, have usage of it, etc. and I doubt the police would pursue it with that in writing. Not legally binding of course, just obvious a non-verbal agreement was made.
He's literally just sent her another message saying she can have it. The bloke is a loon.0
