I worked for two small companies in London many years ago - both had a high percentage of Jewish employees who did keep Kosher. We had some marvellous staff Christmas parties and ate some really interesting meals. I'm mainly veggie but eat some fish, so I was always seated on the Kosher table. One of the best and most enjoyable meals we had was at a rather nice Chinese restaurant in west London.

All the dishes we shared were veggie or vegan and it remains one of the most delicious banquets I've ever been to! No dairy at all; protein was crispy tofu or seitan and lots of noodle dishes with various stir fried vegetables in delicious sauces. It opened my eyes to how simple it could be to satisfy a variety of dietary requirements.

You can still have cheese. You just can't serve meat and dairy together

My fav midweek veggie meal is cheese and onion pie, whole family loves it

    Really easy and very tasty

Just don't use lard in the pastry

kosher is having two sets of everything , sinks , ovens pans etc , its not jut a case of not serving certain foods together

    I'm well aware of that

However it's a bit ridiculous to place someone who is strict kosher in a non kosher household We don't even know if the lass in question is strict kosher, and seems ok from reading what the op has posted being in a non kosher home. ESP in Northern Ireland where the Jewish community is less then 80 and there is no such thing even as a Jewish school and kosher food is extremely hard to come by

Was just trying to help the op with meals that can be served

And here, in the real world, the majority of progressive/reform Jews do not do that, let alone expect anyone else to. Not serving/cooking meat together should suffice.

If that is not good enough for the child in question she never should have been placed with a non-devout family.

We are/were reform and my mums kitchen has rotational symmetry; on the meat side the back door is at the bottom, fridge/freezer beside it, sink, worktops with cupboards above and below, cooker along the wall at the top (massive 6 ring monster), then door through to dining room and reverse order of the above finishing with the back wall where there are more cupboards.

I've never seen another kitchen like ours, not even in other reformed Jews houses though some will have 2 sinks and 2 fridges there isn't a line down the middle of the room to denote which side is which.

My mum was hard core but I was still allowed to go to Italy for exchange most summers where kosher went right out the window (I'm not a believer, haven't been from a young age). She wouldn't expect our host family to have a set up like hers but I think she expected me to be veggie for a summer and that was never going to happen.

I did wish her the above!
Actually she chose to eat pizza with mozzarella this evening.
She xl aimed to us that her mother does use different pans at home and how they never have meat and dairy together, wash their mouths out if they eat fish and meat at the same meal and have to wait six hours to follow meat with milk.
I'm sure to have some of that wrong but it was very interesting.
Thanks everybody for your help with this.they leave tomorrow.

  • Animal rennet and lipase can be kosher if the animal is slaughtered kosher, (and conversely microbial rennet can be prohibited if it's grown on a non-kosher medium) and the prohibition of mixing meat and dairy doesn't apply.

However cheese is only kosher if the preparation is supervised by a rabbi (halachic restriction from Chazal) so it must be assumed that all generally-available cheese is non-kosher.

Of course individual interpretations may vary :-)

It can even mean totally separate kitchens.
