Washing machine going walkies on spin cycle

My washing machine moves a lot during the fast spin. It becomes very noisy with thumping sounds, and I have to push it back into place afterwards each time. These problems only occurred after I moved house. I couldn't afford professionals so it was moved by a friend with a van, and it might have been damaged then.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? I've read that the load isn't balanced properly and I should put less in, but that hasn't worked.

I don't have much money atm, so I'm wondering whether I should get a repair man, or if the machine is just wrecked and needs replaced. It was bought second hand over 12 years ago.

  • It might just be that the feet on the bottom need adjusting to the new floor. They usually screw in/out to adjust.

    Yes adjust the feet.
Mine jumps about if I have only a small load on, it doesn't move if I have too much in it!
  • When you moved the machine to the new property, did you put any transit bolts in it and if so, have you made sure that these have all been removed?

No, we didn't put transit bolts in it. Tbh, I don't know what they are. It was just loaded in with everything else.

I've checked the 'feet' but can't move them. I'm not sure if they are stuck in one position, or if I'm just not strong enough. There's no movement or wobble in it though.

It could be so many things. Was it on a solid floor before but now on a suspended wooden floor? A spring could've come off or a damper come apart in the move if they weren't careful enough. If it's gradually getting worse then a weight may have come loose.
Getting any of that checked will cost money of course, maybe another secondhand one wouldn't cost much more?

It was on a solid floor before, and now. It still washes the clothes fine, which is why I haven't replaced it yet. My main worry, if I do nothing about it, is that it will cause a flood or something. It moves out so much that I wonder if a tube or something, at the back, will become loose. I've also noticed that the drum seems to swing about a lot more during the spin.

We had this few years before. It would actually move almost a metre by the time it was finished. I am sure we removed the transit bolts and it sorted the problem. Our current one had to be adjusted to the floor levels to stop moving. Are you sure you had the transit bolts removed when you used it before? As far as I remember they are at the back of the machines.

  • Also it might be the bearing is on its way out..

We had this and the fix with labour and bearing was £80 and took him about 40 mins.

Get a spirit level and check the machine is level both side-side and back-front. If not, use the levelling adjusters at the bottom front of the machine to make it level.

Given the age of it, getting it repaired my be a non-starter if the parts are no longer available.

If they're nut shaped you can use a spanner on them.
