I just had mine removed this week. Had it in since last sept, overall I have gained a stone since I had it in and finding it very difficult to shift the weight. I did see some benefits of it but the sore large painful breasts and weight gain led me to have to removed.

Becles your GP can't insist you have a mirena fitted or refuse to take it out. They can say that they won't offer a different treatment plan for your heavy periods until you try it for 6 months however.

Your choices are surely either to stick with it for another month and then ask for a gynae referral, or if you would rather go back to your old pattern of bleeding (which doesn't sound like it was a lot better) to go to a FPC and have it removed there.

I had mine inserted at the beginning of March after not having one for 3 or 4 years, as I had been having heavy periods for the last year or so. The first period after it went in was even heavier than before, and the next one was about the same, but the last one was a bit better. I'm also getting some breakthrough bleeding and my cycle is shorter. Personally, I'm going to stick with it for another few months to see if it helps longer term but I'm not having any other symptoms from having it in. If I wanted it out though no GP would tell me that this couldn't happen!

Just an update after five months of having Mirena.

There hasn't really been a reduction in the bleeding at all. I'm still spotting most of the time and my main period has moved closer together so I'm getting them every 16-18 days now which is worse than before.

I now have horrendously sore breasts, have crampy horrible pains most of the time especially in the left side of my abdomen, feel really run down, I'm getting horrific headaches, not sleeping well due to the pain and I feel nauseous most of the time. I haven't changed my diet or exercise levels but I've put on 1½ stone in weight which just won't shift at all.

I hate this thing but the GP won't take it out as I have to wait and see if things will settle. I'm really fed up with it :(

Get yourself to family planning or see another GP. Have a read up on progesterone intolerance too, your symptoms are very real and shouldn't be dismissed. Your GP sounds scary!

Go to a family planning clinic and ask for it to be removed. You don't have to go through your GP.

Our GPs don't actually touch contraception now, it's all done at the clinic.

I had one...hated it and had it removed after about 2 months. The GP did try and talk me to persevere but I'd had enough.

I was on the mini-pill once in the past and had horrific side effects. I was told mirena would be fine as the hormones are kept in the womb and can't affect the rest of your body. Have since read on the internet that this isn't true.

I don't even need it for contraception as I'm single. I just wanted the constant bleeding and PMT symptoms to stop as they are a nuisance. The GP said I had to try this before they could offer me any other treatment.

I'm going away on holiday in July and really wanted the bleeding stopping before then. It takes the edge off relaxing when you're wearing swimwear and worrying about leaking!
Here I go again on my own....

Try the Depo. Everybody is different but it worked for Mrs G and gave all the benefits you are looking for with no side effects... for her.

I had spotting, bleeding for 3 months then nothing. Replaced after 5 years and no spotting and again 5 years later.

So for me it has been a dream. No bleeding for 15 years. Will hopefully have my 4th one in a few months.

The depo is also (synthetic) progesterone. If Becles can't tolerate the Mirena that is likely to be even worse :(

Becles can I recommend you get this book? The library should be able to get a copy. I found it so useful I ended up buying a copy, although I've not seen it for months as it is constantly passed between friends.
