Unfortunately if a vehicle is SORN then it cannot be insured.
So a potentially expensive asset cannot be insured against theft or fire? Sure about that?

I know they are right that you cannot insure a SORN car the reason being the car has to be roadworthy and a SORN car is not on the road.
Not on the road == not roadworthy? Sure about that?

Hi, I have worked in insurance for a number of years and I have just left due to childcare reasons.
No offence but can't you just put this in your signature or something rather than tell us on every post?

No offence, but your repeatedly telling us you have previously been working "in insurance" shouldn't be taken by newbies to mean you are posting correct advice regarding insurance matters!

rs65 had some good advice for us following more nonsense being posted by caliew in another thread:

There is a warning about this problem from MSE at the top of every page:

Your car is in the garage being repaired when its tax and MOT expire. You cannot re-tax it without MOT, so strictly speaking you are meant to immediately SORN it.

Are you seriously saying you must immediately cancel your insurance, and then start it again when you go to collect the car?

You can legally drive a SORNed car to a pre-arranged MOT as long as it has insurance. How do you get insurance if what you say is true?

I think if you read the rules they say "you do not NEED to insure a SORNed car", not that you MUST NOT insure a SORNed car.

There are many policies for Laid Up, Accidental Damage, Fire & Theft cover...back in the day...the reputable insurers would happily lay up a policy for off road periods (eg. camper van off road and untaxed over winter).

It is possible to insure a vehicle that is not taxed, but make sure you get Laid up, Acc Dmg, F&T, not just LUF&T, as if a tree falls on your SORNd vehicle you would be stuffed.

Unfortunately, cheap online premium seekers are so blinded by a premium saving they don't look beyond their current needs.

It used to be that if a car was laid up/SORNd for over 6m your NCB would not increase.

As an aside..how do you think a car sales garage can insure their untaxed vehicle stock against damage?

I had no idea that a SORN car could not be insured?!
What happens if someone damages/steals it whilst it is SORN?

Slightly off topic but I am about to sell my car to a mechanic.
At what point can I cancel my tax and insurance on it.
The day he collects it and signs the V5?

I have no doubt he will SORN it before working on it and selling it on but exactly when can I cancel my Insurance and stop my tax DD on it?

You can insure a SORNd vehicle Basil.

As for selling yours, it is no longer your problem once the Yellow Slip on the V5 is signed, money handed over, and contract completed.

It can be insured. Ignore that poster.

You don't need to cancel your tax - it cancels when DVLA process the change of keeper. Cancel your insurance as soon as you sell the car.

    Hi all

I have spoken to Dvla and there is no law against insuring a car which is declared Sorn. I have handed all of the details over to a solicitor today who has reviewed the policy book and the declaration process and is very confident that Tescos are wrong and that the fact that there is nothing in the policy book means they can't just cancel a policy. He will be contacting them next week.
I went through the application process with the details for a car which is sorned and at no point was I asked if the car was off road declared or was the insurance declined.
I will post again when I get some results.

    Just a caution.....

Whoever told you it was illegal to insure a SORN car was clearly wrong.

Tesco are however free to decline to insure SORN cars if they wish.

If they don't ask you if the car is SORN, then it's not a material fact that you need to advise them of.

There will be a clause in the policy allowing them to cancel the policy but there will be a procedure to follow.

The complaints procedure is free so I would be using it before paying a solicitor.
