It will soon be my wife's birthday so I looked on Amazon for some ideas for a present.

10 minutes later she shouts up the stairs, why are you looking at presents on Amazon?

She was reading a book on her Kindle and along the bottom of the page are suggestions based on what I was looking at.

How can I turn this off?

As far as I know you cannot "turn it off", I take it you are looking on the Amazon account that is linked to the kindle and the kindle that was bought was the one that allows ads so anything that is looked at on that account will connect to the kindle.
I would try opening a new Amazon account for yourself so not connected to the one for the kindle as that should stop anything byou look at being shown on the kindle

Not sure whether this will turn them off but it costs an extra £10

No it would not work as when the OP logs into Amazon the kindle will pick up the amazon link and can display related items on it.

As it's your wife's birthday soon, surely she knows why you were looking at presents on Amazon. Did she need to ask?

Think yourself lucky that that was all you were looking at. ;)

You can turn the ads off, as cajef & I have spoken posted, pay £10 to opt out of the special offers and your wife will no longer see any ads on her Kindle.

You can also sign out of your Amazon account while browsing for items to stop related ads showing, but if you were to go ahead and buy something, you have to sign, and the related ads will pop up on the Kindle.
