Insurance question for a lunatic

Options
Morning team!

I have the immense pleasure of working with a bloke who is coming to the end of the inflated insurance period after his second driving ban.

He was looking forward to hugely reduced premiums when his renewal comes round in August because this would have been his first year without having to declare his drink driving, plus he has six years no claims bonus and is now in his thirties... (31, I think)

So to celebrate, he has reversed into a parked Mercedes and caused 3 grands worth of damage....

His no claims bonus isn't protected so am I right in thinking that he is going to begin another few years of astronomical insurance premiums?

It surely won't be as much as he has been paying? (I think about 1300 for last year's cover)

Him not driving, although not a bad idea, is not an option because he needs wheels for his job and to visit his kid.....

I would certainly hope so, although even more I'd hope that he realises that he's not fit to be on the road and finds some other way of getting around (which clearly he managed to do during his 2 driving bans).

Both bans were for drink? If so, then it must be eleven years since his last conviction - so he managed to be banned for a year, then be banned again, all by the time he was 20?

Blimey. Still, if he's been driving for six years without a problem until now, he must've learned that lesson, at least.

No, a single at-fault collision claim on an otherwise clean (as far as they can see) record is not going to be as serious as having the tail-end of a second DD ban on his licence...

His second ban was about 5 or 6 years ago.... (ish) but was told by his insurance company last August that he wouldn't have to declare from this August onwards....

So he's either been told wrong or neither ban was drink. Drink bans stay on licences for eleven years, and a second in a decade is a minimum three-year ban.
  • I think he may have been told wrong then. Both were for drink. Am doing a quick Google whilst I sit here and it seems you don't have to declare after 5 years?

You have to answer the question your insurer actually asks, and if they ask for five years, they only need to be told five years. But it WILL stay visible on his licence record.

Okay. .. so going with this- His insurance will be for a 31 year old, with 'no previous convictions' (ahem), no no claims and a three grand smash?

If he had 6 years NCB, it will probably go down to 3 at renewal. His renewal notice will tell him what he has and his policy will tell him how it operates.

    Thanks for that....

Not as bad as it seems then?

Is there anything to be said for paying the three grand repair bill himself and keeping his no claims...

I'm assuming he'll have to mention the smash for years?
