iPhone 5c to a IPhone 6s

What's the best way to transfer my daughter from a iPhone 5c to a 6s

Both phones unlocked and using a SIM only chip.
Is there a simple way of transferring all apps and data and texts in one simple go

Cheers for any help

Personally I prefer iTunes over iCloud

Plug 5c into iTunes. Click backup. Wait until that's finished.

Plug 6s into iTunes. Hit restore from backup. Select backup you just made of 5c.

    Wait for that to finish.

    Done.

Assuming this needs to be done via a PC then ?

Wanted to avoid doing that .....if I put the SIM from the 5c into the 6s and reload the apps.....whatsapp and Facebook etc. What else would I need to do....

Why did you want to avoid plugging it into a PC? That's the fastest and easiest way of transferring stuff across to the new phone. Plus it will pretty much be a complete copy of the existing phone and all of its apps and stuff on it. She won't lose her messages, photos etc by doing it this way.

If you re-download the apps fresh onto the 6 without backup, the whatsapp will lose all of her messages and will be blank. The sms box will also be empty, and so will the phone-book.

I would avoid using the icloud as it can be slow (since it depends on the uplink speed of your internet connection) and also the space they give for free - 5gb - will likely not be enough to move everything across, and leave you with a part backed up phonje.

Why? It's much easier and quicker to do it via iTunes.

You could back everything up to iCloud, be aware you only get 5gb free so if your daughter has more than than she wants to back up you need to pay for more iCloud storage. And if there's any apps she uses that are no longer on the App Store iCloud won't copy them over as all it does it keep a list and download them from the App Store, it can't download an app no longer there.

You can do it manually. Take sim out of 5c put it in 6s. Set the phone up. Sign into iTunes and manually copy over contacts and then download apps one by one but how long will that take?

Plus you can't copy over things like messages and whatsapp conversations.

Plugging into iTunes is by far the easiest and quickest way to completely copy everything that's on the 5c to the 6s.

Also if you do it manually and your daughter wants some pictures on the 6s that were on the 5c then you have to plug into iTunes to put any pictures she wants to keep on anyway. Or to put on existing music that hasn't been bought through iTunes (if it's been bought through iTunes you can download it again on the phone).

Unless your daughter doesn't want anything at all that's on the 5c transferring to the 6s. Then at some point you will have to plug in to iTunes.

Not sure why you'd want to make life harder for yourself and not just do that in the first place.

  • Ideally I wanted to avoid the PC ( mine ) in case some of my stuff ended up on her phone and vice Versa.

I'll give it a go via iTunes

That won't happen unless you select the wrong backup. Just double check you select the backup you've just made (it will have the phone name, date and time next to it).

Loads of posts on here saying not to use iCloud, but personally I'd make sure that you are using iCloud in the long run.

Use your computer for the backup of the old phone and restore to the new phone if you must, but I'd make sure that once she has the new phone up and running you enable (and pay for if needed - it's only 79 PENCE per month) iCloud.

For the price you pay it's an extremely good fail-safe should she loose the phone or damage the phone beyond repair - I've lost count of the amount of times this has saved friends and family from utter devastation of loosing all their contacts, messages, photos etc...

Yes you can manually backup to iTunes, but it's often a pain remembering to do it, for the price of iCloud I'd rather just pay pennies and be reassured that it's there to fall back on if I need it.
