Refund to switched account without card

There's a thread on the Consumer Rights board that I think raises a question that is worthy of discussion here (I don't recall seeing it previously).

The OP there made a purchase with a debit card, then switched the account and destroyed the card. When she had to return the purchase the retailer would only refund to the original card or a replacement card for that account - but of course, the account had been closed and no card for it existed. She had to accept store credit.
The question asked was: should a debit card for a switched account be retained until the time when transactions on the old account are no longer transferred to the new one?
I've never used the switching service myself but it does sound like throwing the old card in a drawer for 13 months just in case it is needed wouldn't be a bad idea.

Right, I must have missed that change. That actually seems excessive given that pretty much any recurring payment will happen with a period of 12 months or less and that an authorised transaction ought to be taken within 6 months.0
