Retailer wouldn't issue refund to new account, but old account no longer exists

Not sure if I am posting this is the right place, but here goes...

I made a purchase in a clothing store using my debit card for my current account but then about a week later switched my current account to a new bank. As instructed by my new bank, I destroyed the debit card for my old account,

I then needed to return a few items of clothes (within the 28 day return period) but the store refused to give me a refund as they could only issue a refund to the original card, or another card for the same account... But that account no longer exists!!

I ended up being given store credit but can't help feeling a bit cheated...

Who (if anyone) is at fault here?

You unfortunately, if you used the bank switching then the money would have been sent to your new account

For 13 months after you've switched, your new provider will arrange for payments accidentally made to your old account, or taken from your old account, to be automatically redirected to your new account. It will also contact the sender and give it your new account details.

In work, a car retailer, we have to issue the refund to the same card as our card machines look for the original transaction & match it up. If a sales exec processes a refund on a card which hasn't been used on the machine it will reject the payment.

I did use the bank switching service...

Should I not have destroyed the old card?

It would appear not in this situation, and it's probably something that people who use the switching service should think about. I may start a thread on the banking board to ask about this on behalf of you and anyone else who might be caught by it.
