RBS and NatWest to Split ?

Not sure if this true or not so take it with a pinch of salt, but I have heard from 2 people so far (One quite a large shareholder, and the other who works in RBS head office in Edinburgh) that one of the things being considered to return RBS to the Black is to split RBS and NatWest apart.
Again not sure if this is true but I am not sure if it would make commercial sense, I mean RBS is saying it wants to slim down and this Scottish referendum thing keeps cropping up, so I don't know personally, so just wondering if anyone else has heard anything.

It will happen in 2017 and has been an EU requirement since about 2010.
It's not new news.

The branch sale isn't the same thing as splitting RBS and NatWest. RBS branches will still exist in Scotland and it will still own NatWest in England. Maybe the OP has heard some rumour that RBS wants to sell off NatWest?0 -
I suppose it's possible that there could be a split of retail and commercial/corporate banking, with one going to RBS and the other to NatWest. It's not something I've heard of from any of my ex-colleagues in Edinburgh and London but they may not be far enough up the food chain if it's being discussed at a high level.0

I would imagine that it's a option should independence proceed but NatWest operates an it's own English banking licence and will no longer operates in Scotland after W&G splits off.
IMO Halifax is more vulnerable as it barely operates in Scotland but has a massive chunk of the rUK mortgages all using the BOS banking licence. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Halifax started opening Scot branches after they were forced to change the current Scot footprint to BOS branches, think its 2 or 3 branches so far. I have a Reward A/C with the Edinburgh branch which I dont live near to or Glasgow the other/s, I cant recall if they opened the second Glasgow branch as planned.SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe0 -
I'm surprised from a national and international point of view and cost savings that RBS Group does not revert to one identity...National Westminster Bank or Scottish & National Westminster/National & Scotland etc etc having NATIONAL and or Westminster in its branding over Scotland only because the world knows RBS is owned by UK government in majority.
It has only ever been a Scottish bank name, circa the 1707 act of union, its always been a british bank governed by british law so its no loss to drop Scotland out its name.
When they cant address a brand image problem because of the bail out its hardly surprising the government debt due is massive all these years later...a simple rebrand over how many CEO's since government majority, between CEO's and a majority shareholder government for years to not think yes a rebrand to National in its brand for goodwill is just unprofessional, IT IS A NATIONAL BRITISH BANK and always has been even before UK government majority ownership.
You just cant get the (public or private) staff...SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe0 -

...maybe they could go right back to National Provincial and Westminster Banks:)
I had my first current account with the former about 50 years ago0 -
I hope it happens to be honest, RBS is too big.0

Without what was NatWest , RBS in UK terms is insignificant. A damaged brand as well. The bank has been contracting for some years still a few more to go as will take time to wind down and sell overseas operations. Hopefully the UK taxpayer will at least recover some of the money invested.0
