Purchasing Microsoft Office from Ebay

Is it safe to do this?

My son is selling me his PC, which is pretty high spec and only a couple of years old but doesn't have office (as he uses it for watching films and gaming!)

There seem to be quite a few sellers offering Office (and yes I need the proper version so it's compatible with my work so Open Office won't do). What should I look out for?

Thanks

It's fair to assume that anyone selling office for anything significantly below retail is pirated. May as well go legit, check the price on Microsoft.CO.UK and Curry's and ebuyer and dabs and you probably don't need to do too much more research.

Remember Office 365 is software RENTAL not PURCHASE, so will be cheaper as you keep on paying. It's actually a pretty good deal for most people TBH.

Search on Ebay for 'ms office 365 personal' Go for the sellers that have sold quite a few. Should cost about £30 per licence

Buy a few licences if you want it for more than a year.
Once you have added them all into your MS account so you have x years of Office 365 personal, go to https://www.thurrott.com/cloud/office-365/847/tip-convert-office-365-personal-office-365-home-just-9-99 to find out how to convert your personal to home with 5 licences

openoffice is actually compatible with MS office, all you have to do when creating and saving a document is select 'save as' and change the file type to a .doc /.xls format (will say ms word /excel in the dropdown menu) default file extension for openoffice is .odt (for word processed files) which aren't compatible, just change this on the 'save as' window.

Openoffice can also open any MS office files

This is true but formatting may not translate properly and if you work with Office files that macros then they are unlikely to work properly in Open Office.

OpenOffice is NOT fully compatible with Microsoft Office. Various components of MS Office are not implemented in OpenOffice.

I paid student price (part time student) £40 for MS Office 2016 for 2 windows, 2 mac and 2 smartphones/tablets.
And that was through direct Microsoft site.
Go to their site, and start a chat. Ask for a discount or any offers. They will give you.

I second the 'ask at work' - my employer offered everyone a reduced rate for full Microsoft Office for home use (think it was about £6.99 one off payment) about 4 years ago. A bargain. Having said that, about 6 months later they told everyone that the offer was no longer valid and we all had to remove it from our home PC's - I didn't, and it's still working fully. Not sure how full it is - I really only use Outlook, Word, and Excel but seems to work exactly as my work packages do.
