if you change the file format defaults in Llibre Office it will automatically save in the required MS Office fornats, eg .xlsx or .docx
And it also has the same shortcomings as Open Office.

    I.E. format problems, macros etc

    Starter version is free.

However a few caveats. It is Office 2010 and from what I have found so far it may not be available. You can download the downloader but I haven't tried to run it 'cos I have full Office 365 on my machine

It consists of cut down versions of Word and Excel. Reduced functionality AND adverts.

Despite the fact that LibreOffice / OpenOffice can save documents in a MS compatible file format, experience shows that there are many formatting discrepancies between the office suites. The fact is that if you run a business and want to look professional or simply want other people to see your work as you intended, buying an Office 365 licence or a legit older version of MS Office really is the only way to go.

Totally legit & huge peace of mind all round.

You could also ask on yahoo freegle sites (recycling) if anyone has an old copy of office they no longer use along with the licence key
That's if you are using windows 7 or lower

Since MS pulled their students discounts, it is cheaper to buy at other places.
    E.G.
MS Office Home & Student 2016
    Software4students £114
    Ebuyer £99.
No difference in price between Software4students and MS direct for Office 365.
