    Well I phoned RTB because I have lived in Council property's for 20+ years with my Mum we are entitled to full maximum discount should they agree to sell it.

    I dont see how I can be branded "feathering my own nest" I have committed to stay with my Mum to help for many many years. I am not just jumping in to this for gains for myself!

    Of course you are - why else would you be wanting to buy it?

    Presumably you and your mother have a secure tenancy and, as such, will be able to stay there for as long as you want to without having to pay out for any improvements/maintenance which you would have to if you own it.

    I really hope you and your mum get what you want out of this. I can understand why some may not support the "Right To Buy" scheme as it is open to abuse but at the end of the day, it's there to serve a purpose. You / your mother have been paying rent on the property for over 20 years and personally my view is that you SHOULD receive a discount for purchasing it. The scheme is in place for tenants just like you.

    You came here looking for genuine advice and I can't believe the harsh replies you've had. You didn't ask for that and certainly didn't deserve it. Most will certainly understand why you were a little annoyed with these posts. Unfortunately, some feel a little high and mighty sitting behind a computer screen and they throw their opinion into the ring, positive and negative. It's the nature of public forums. Looks like some people don't want to save you any money... despite this being the "Money Saving Expert" forum!

    Anyway, I hope it doesn't put you off using the forum in future. Most of the replies here are generally good, sound advice (even if it's not what you want to hear).

    Because they want to extend the property to make things a little more comfortable for both of them? The council won't do that. They've lived there for over 20 years, perhaps they want to remain in the house they know and love. If they want to extend, they need to buy it first. After 20+ years of paying rent, can't see why they wouldn't want to find out about a discount.

    Thats what this forums for.

    Your mother should have independent legal advice before she decides to give up her secure tenancy. It's not something to give away lightly.

    You do realise that you don't have to own a property to get a disabled facilities grant don't you? If the reason you need extra room is due to mums disability.

    You are in your early twenties, presumably?

    Are you really going to stay living with your mum for the rest of her life, in this bungalow? Do you not have any desire to meet a partner or have children at some point in your future? Will you never work further afield or find yourself in financial difficulties or unemployed?

    I understand the temptation, but as it stands your mum has a bungalow that she can basically never be evicted from, where all the maintenance will be arranged and paid for by the council, and the right to have adaptations etc. as her needs change. That's enormously valuable, worth far more than in many ways than the profit that could be made on the eventual equity.

    Have you looked into any other ways to stay near enough to care for your mum without having to give up that valuable security she has? Could you move out to your own place but stay living close by? Could you both apply together for a bigger/more suitable property? Could you speak to the council about paying yourself for some improvements/changes to the house?

    To allow council tenants the opportunity to own their own home, giving them a tangible asset, and at the same time release funds to local authorities.

    Don't get me wrong, it has many many flaws which have allowed the system to be badly abused. It's not uncommon for individuals to remain in a property for as short a time as possible, buy it at a discount, then sell for a huge profit. Then start again. I get that and understand why so many are against the scheme. But, there are those that have paid their rent for decades with nothing to show for it. The scheme was set up to allow those ones the chance to own their own property.

    Like I've said, I get that some are for the scheme and some are against. It's your opinion which you are more than entitled to. But there's really no excuse for the way this new member has been treated.
