I want to buy a laptop to replace my desktop computer but want to try it out first.

Can I buy a laptop online, try it out and if I don't like it send it back and get a full refund including postage?
over 73 but not over the hill.

A laptop is not something you can really try out, why not go and have a look at them in a shop.

    No.

Go to PC World and try one out there.

Define what you mean by "trying it out". Would that only be "what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods" and does not go "beyond the sort of handling that might reasonably be allowed in a shop"?

You can do the above but anything beyond that and the retailer can reduce any refund to take into account any diminished value.

I know QVC will let you test the ones they sell for 30 days and if not happy you can return it but as far as I know you get the cash back foir the purchase but not the return cost unless it is faulty.

Why do you want to try it? Is there something specific you want it to do? Perhaps you could read reviews online to find out if you think it will suit.

A laptop does the same job as another laptop irrespective of price or brand.

Buy 1 from QVC as it fits your purpose.

Whenever I buy a computer I tended to do a lot of research to find out which one was best for my needs, including looking at reviews. You can also go to shops like PC world and see which models suit you better, but it won't necessarily show what a laptop can do (i.e. it isn't until you load a game on it you discover it doesn't have enough memory - in spite of the reassurances from the salesman that it would - to play a much wanted game.

I'd always advise to avoid buying from PC world though as they tend to be expensive for what they are. You'll find better deals for a similiar model elsewhere.

Basically take time to make sure whatever you buy suits you and is capable of what you want.

There is a computer/tech part of this site - people there may advise you what you need if you tell them what you want a laptop to do.

if there are specific games you want to play, check their recommended specifications against those of the laptop. with games, the most critical specs are the graphics card (most laptops have an integrated graphics card, not a dedicated one unless you go for a really high end and expensive model), RAM (can help to reduce framerate) and the processor type (quad core processors seem to be pretty standard now)

If its just general spreadsheets etc, you're probably just going to be more concerned with screen size and keyboard size as small notebook style laptops have tiny keyboards and if u have 'fat' fingers it wont be much good!
