Moving gas and electric meters outside

Our meters are currently in a cupboard under the stairs. We have other plans for this cupboard, plus it would be more convenient if meter readers didn't need entry to the house to read them. We have space (a small open porch and garden) to the front of the property so that's not a problem.

What's involved in doing this? What tradespeople will we need or will the energy supplier do the work? Any chance of a ballpark figure of what it's likely to cost?

Thank you.

I am first to post, but unqualified/inexperienced at this ... however, I want to move my outside meter down the wall some feet.

From initial looks I believe only the utility company can move it - not any tradesmen .... and, for my budget, I've waved a figure of £250 around in my head.

A friend of mind had both meters moved internal to external , no great distance to speak of , £700+ for the electric and slightly less for the gas , but that was 4 years ago

I am currently, today in fact, having my electricity meter moved about three feet on an internal wall so that it will be inside a cupboard in my new kitchen.

In my case there are two things that HAVE to be moved by electricity suppliers. The main fuse and the meter itself (these may require different organisations to move them, although not in my case). This is costing £292 +VAT. It is about two weeks since I first approached them about moving it, so no great lead time.

My wife had similar quotes about ten years ago, although it was the other way around, gas was more expensive at £700+.

Crikey! Some of these prices sound a bit steep. I didn't expect it to be free, but that seems like a lot of money for what I thought was a smallish job.

I wonder if it might be worth trying to haggle. Energy suppliers seem to be quite aggressive about persuading people to switch to them. Might there be any mileage in suggesting that if they want to charge so much, you'll just shift because Acme Energy will do the job much more cheaply?

    You can always ask.

In my case the fuse had to be moved by the company responsible for the street to house wiring and the meter by my energy supplier. In my case that was, fortunately, the same organisation. They still have to send two different people to do the two jobs.

I suspect their attitude will be 'you want it moved, we are happy with it where it is and our engineers aren't standing around waiting for your call'

Perhaps its the companies i mentioned when its the equipment before the internal piping and meter , more applicable when moving in to out and vice versa maybe
