Does anyone know if having the mattress on the floor is ok? It might be a week or so before I finally have a bed and I'd hate to damage the brand new mattress in any way.

I can't see how it would do any harm at all.

A new mattress will be fine on the floor, just don't go jumping around on it!

Good luck with the John Lewis one, their customer service is great though so even if you do have a problem it'll be sorted efficiently.
