New metal bed disaster - are wooden ones better?

My new bed finally arrived today and it seemed much easier to assemble than I expected. The instructions were a bit confusing but I had worked out the basics. Until I realised that the vast majority of the bolts and screws were missing.

That was bad enough but then I discovered that part of the foot board was badly dented. The decorative finials won't fit due to the dents and the few screws they did provide are the wrong size and won't 'grip'.

I'll be sleeping on the floor on the mattress for a while, as my old bed is being collected in about an hour.

I've requested a refund from the company but it's made me wary of ordering another metal bed. Are wooden beds better quality? I was thinking they wouldn't be as likely to have dents in them.

By the sounds of it, practically all beds are better quality than this one!

Seriously, there are good wooden beds and good metal beds. I'd be blaming the supplier, not the fact the bed was metal.

I think you're right Casper. I had read something about how wooden beds can be fixed more easily if anything goes wrong, but any bed should be useable, and this one isn't. I'll order from a different company.

Just wish I hadn't sold my old bed so quickly, but I'm sure I'll manage on the floor for now!

My wooden bedframe dont have problem
  • Cheap metal beds are light and hollow and have inherent weaknesses. Will move, wobble, squeak etc. If you can't afford a proper cast iron bed which will be stable and weigh a ton, then a simple wooden bed frame will be preferable.
TBH, it is worth paying for a properly made bed. Avoid anything made in China and shipped in, more likely to be distorted and not fit together properly. You can buy both wooden and cast iron bed frames which are made I the uk and it is worth shopping around.

No. I have a huge, but light, Ikea metal frame bed. I've had it about 20 years and it has been apart and reassembled at least half a dozen times. It doesn't move, wobble or squeak.

The whole thing is held together with just eight allen bolts.

How much was your bed and where did you buy it from?

I have bought metal beds for around £400 for a double from Bensons and have never had a problem.

What budget and size are you looking at?
I don't know what style you like, but there are plenty of £100 - 150 wooden frame double bed seems to be alright.
  • My metal bed came from Millside Forge / Nights in iron a decade or so back. Fitted together perfectly, no damage, very robust. Jolly heavy as well, being made of iron.

    They are quite expensive though.

It was a very cheap bed so I wasn't expecting it to be great quality but useable. I prefer the look of metal bed frames and wanted something compact as the room is very small. The wooden beds do seem to be a bit bulkier.

It was ordered from Wayfair and, to their credit, they've already sent an email confirming a full refund. It was the only one they had I really liked and had sprung slats, but I've found another in John Lewis. Hopefully that will arrive without damage.

Does anyone know if having the mattress on the floor is ok? It might be a week or so before I finally have a bed and I'd hate to damage the brand new mattress in any way.
